MLB News: Zac Gallen, Diamondbacks take series from host Mets

Zac Gallen pitched six sharp innings in his 150th career start and the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks held on for a 4-2 victory over the New York Mets on Thursday afternoon.

Gallen (2-4) ended a four-start winless skid and bounced back from allowing nine runs in his past two starts against the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves. He held the Mets to one run on two hits and helped Arizona become the first team to take a series from them in New York since the Athletics took two of three on Aug. 13-15, 2024.

Gallen struck out eight, his most since fanning 13 Yankees on April 2 in 42-degree conditions in New York.

Eugenio Suarez accounted for Arizona’s first two runs before Geraldo Perdomo and rookie Tim Tawa added late homers as the Diamondbacks won two of three in the set to take a series against the Mets in New York for the first time since 2017.

Arizona’s patient approach helped chase New York starter Kodai Senga (3-2) early. Senga allowed one run on five hits in four innings but threw 87 pitches, including 60 in the third and fourth.

Juan Soto hit his first two homers at his new home ballpark for the Mets when he connected against Gallen in the sixth. Soto also went deep in the eighth for his 24th career multi-homer game.

After Soto connected, Kevin Ginkel escaped massive trouble to end the eighth in his second appearance since returning from shoulder inflammation. He walked Pete Alonso and allowed a double to Jesse Winker to put runners at second and third.

Ginkel fanned Mark Vientos on a check swing and ended the lengthy inning by getting a called third strike on a sinker against Brandon Nimmo.

Following Ginkel’s high-wire eighth, Shelby Miller pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth career save and first this season.

The Diamondbacks went ahead in the fourth after Senga fanned Pavin Smith on a forkball with the bases loaded to end the third.

Following a walk to Josh Naylor, Suarez appeared to bounce into a double play. A brief replay overturned first base umpire C.B. Bucknor’s call. Suarez later scored from second base on a single by Alek Thomas and a throwing error on Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil.

After Suarez lifted a sacrifice fly in the fifth, Perdomo homered to right in the seventh off Max Kranick and Tawa homered to left in the ninth off Reed Garrett.
