Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a two-out, three-run homer in a five-run first inning off Walker Buehler Friday night for the host New York Yankees, who raced out to a big lead and earned a 9-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox in the first meeting of the season between the rivals.

Buehler (4-4) was one strike away from stranding two in the first but hung a 0-2 curveball. Chisholm’s shot landed on the netting above Monument Park.

Chisholm added an RBI single in the third and is now 5-for-7 lifetime in the regular season against Buehler. He finished with three hits and is 8-for-16 in four games since returning Tuesday from a 28-game absence due to an oblique strain.

Anthony Volpe hit a two-run homer into the right-center field seats in the first but also left the game with a left elbow contusion after being hit by a changeup in the second. Volpe was hit with the bases loaded and Paul Goldschmidt scored after reaching base via a throwing error by Boston rookie Marcelo Mayer.

Aaron Judge had three hits, including an RBI single in the fifth. Judge ended the night with a .397 average.

Goldschmidt blasted a solo homer in the sixth as the Yankees won for the 20th time in 27 games since dropping three straight May 3-5.

A 2024 World Series hero for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Buehler was tagged for seven runs — five earned — on seven hits in two innings. He struck out two and walked two in his shortest outing this season.

Mayer hit his first career homer in the fifth and Rafael Devers slugged a two-run drive in the seventh for the Red Sox, who lost for the ninth time in 12 games. Wilyer Abreu lifted a sacrifice fly in the sixth and pinch hitter Romy Gonzalez had a two-run single in the sixth.

New York’s Will Warren (4-3) allowed four runs on three hits in 5 1/3 innings after getting shelled for seven runs in 1 1/3 innings in Saturday’s 18-2 loss to the Dodgers. The right-hander struck out six and walked four.

Brent Headrick gave up the homer to Devers and Fernando Cruz finished the seventh with two strikeouts. Jonathan Loaisiga pitched a scoreless eighth and Devin Williams converted his seventh save.
