MLB News: Trevor Rogers ends winless drought as Marlins beat D-backs

Trevor Rogers pitched six strong innings for his first win since last July 1 as the host Miami Marlins defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1 on Friday night.

Miami broke the game open in the fourth inning with all five of their runs — coming on four straight RBI hits — with two outs.

Rogers (1-2) allowed five hits, one walk and one run, and striking out seven. Miami had lost his past 10 starts. During that stretch, he went 0-7 with a 5.44 ERA.

Three Miami relievers — Huascar Brazoban, Dylan Floro and A.J. Puk — held Arizona to one hit, no walks and no runs.

Arizona starter Madison Bumgarner (0-2) allowed nine hits and five runs in five innings. The four-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion has a 7.90 ERA through three starts this season.

Marlins second baseman Luis Arraez, who leads the majors with a .500 batting average, sat out Friday’s game. He suffered a cut on his left hand on Wednesday when he dove toward home plate and clipped the spikes of Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto.

In addition, the Marlins rested center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., leaving Miami without perhaps its two most dynamic offensive players.

However, Garrett Hampson filled in for Arraez and smacked an RBI double off the wall in left, and Bryan De La Cruz replaced Chisholm and went 3-for-4.

With game scoreless, De La Cruz and Avisail Garcia led off the bottom of the fourth with singles. Then, with one out, Jean Segura hit a chopper. Evan Longoria fielded the ball, stepped on third for the force and fired to first. But Segura’s hustle beat out what could have been an inning-ending double play.

That proved to be huge as Jacob Stallings followed with a run-scoring single. Hampson’s RBI double followed, then Jon Berti’s two-RBI double just inside the third-base line and Garrett Cooper’s run-scoring single. All six hits in the inning were struck sharply.

Arizona got on the board in the seventh, knocking Rogers out of the game with singles by Longoria and Corbin Carroll with no outs. But Brazoban entered and limited Arizona to just Gabriel Moreno’s RBI groundout. In fact, Brazoban got three straight groundouts to end the threat.

The Diamondbacks, who entered the game with 17 steals in 18 attempts, were held to six hits — all singles. They stole just one base, with none caught stealing.
