MLB News: Spring training roundup: Vinny Capra leads Blue Jays over Tigers

Blue Jays rookie Vinny Capra had a career day on Saturday against the Detroit Tigers, leading visiting Toronto to an 18-5 victory in Lakeland, Fla.

Capra, 26, went 2-for-3 with seven RBIs and three runs scored. Saturday’s showing alone topped his production from last season, when he went 1-for-5 with two runs in eight games with the Blue Jays. Toronto selected Capra in the 20th round of the 2018 draft out of the University of Richmond.

The Blue Jays did most of their damage in the fourth inning, scoring a whopping 13 runs.

Zack Short and Miguel Cabrera each hit a home run for the Tigers, who had 12 hits but were hampered by four errors.

Braves 3, Orioles 2

Spencer Strider allowed three hits, one walk and picked up three strikeouts in three shutout innings to earn the win as Atlanta downed host Baltimore in Sarasota, Fla.

Orioles starter Tyler Wells yielded all three runs on five hits — including Michael Harris II’s home run — in two innings.

Astros 4, Red Sox 4

Seven pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts as Boston tied with visiting Houston in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Red Sox had only five hits, including Raimel Tapia’s two-run double, while Corey Julks homered for the Astros.

Braves 7, Twins 5

Matt Olson and Austin Riley each homered in the first inning, while starter Max Fried struck out five in three innings as host Atlanta beat Minnesota in North Port, Fla.

First baseman Chris Williams drove in two runs for the Twins.

Cardinals 9, Nationals 6

Jordan Walker went 4-for-4 and hit two of St. Louis’ five home runs in a victory over host Washington in West Palm Beach, Fla.

The Cardinals outhit the Nationals 14-8, getting homers from Paul DeJong, Nolan Gorman and Matt Koperniak. Dominic Smith and Matt Adams went deep for the Nationals.

Rays 14, Yankees 10

Visiting Tampa Bay scored four runs in the top of the ninth and held on in the bottom half of the inning to dispatch New York in Tampa, Fla.

Curtis Mead hit two home runs for the Rays, while Ronny Simon (three-run homer) and Tristan Gray (solo shot) also went deep. Trey Sweeney hit a two-run blast in the bottom of the ninth for the Yankees, who were not able to complete the comeback.

Phillies 4, Pirates 3

Alec Bohm hit a two-run homer in the third inning, and host Philadelphia edged Pittsburgh in Clearwater, Fla.

The Pirates totaled just four hits, one of which was Ke’Bryan Hayes’ RBI triple. Phillies starter Aaron Nola yielded one hit and two runs (one earned) with no walks and two strikeouts in three innings for the win.

Mets 15, Marlins 4

Justin Verlander allowed one run and two hits while striking out three in three innings while getting plenty of run support as visiting New York cruised by Miami in Jupiter, Fla.

Mark Vientos went 3-for-4 with two homers and five RBIs for the Mets, who outhit the Marlins 16-6. Jean Segura and Santiago Chavez each had an RBI double for Miami.

Cubs 2, Angels 0

Starter Jameson Taillon fanned four batters and allowed one hit in three innings as host Chicago blanked Los Angeles in Mesa, Ariz.

Seven Cubs pitchers combined for the shutout. Each team had five hits, with Mike Tauchman (double) and Nico Hoerner (triple) leading the way for Chicago.

Diamondbacks 9, Giants 5

Dominic Canzone went 2-for-2 with two doubles and three runs as visiting Arizona topped San Francisco in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Michael Conforto (2-for-2) homered to lead off the first inning for the Giants.

Guardians 4, Athletics 4

Leadoff batter Esteury Ruiz homered and drove in three runs as Oakland tied with visiting Cleveland in Mesa, Ariz.

Micah Pries homered and drove in two runs for the Guardians.

Royals 12, Reds 6

Tucker Bradley hit a three-run homer as Kansas City doubled up host Cincinnati in Goodyear, Ariz.

MJ Melendez and CJ Alexander each homered and drove in two runs for the Royals, while Curt Casali did the same for the Reds.

White Sox 5, Rangers 4

Pinch hitter Bryan Ramos singled to the pitcher to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as host Chicago beat Texas in Glendale, Ariz.

The Rangers had tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the inning when Luisangel Acuna homered, then Chicago rallied with two one-out walks, a fielder’s choice and Ramos’ game-winning hit off Antoine Kelly.

Rockies 7, Mariners 1

Starter Kyle Freeland allowed three hits and one walk with two strikeouts in three scoreless innings as visiting Colorado earned a victory over Seattle in Peoria, Ariz.

Alan Trejo homered for the Rockies, and Jake Scheiner went deep for the Mariners.

Padres 5, Diamondbacks 4

Luis Campusano hit a two-run homer and eight pitchers limited Arizona to six hits as visiting San Diego edged out a victory in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Diamondbacks had no extra-base hits but did collect two sacrifice flies.

Brewers 14, Giants 2

Willy Adames hit a three-run homer as host Milwaukee throttled San Francisco in Phoenix.

Five Brewers pitchers limited the Giants to four hits, compared to 11 for Milwaukee. The Brewers hit five home runs. Grant McCray had an RBI single for San Francisco.

Reds 10, Athletics 9

Cincinnati scored twice in the top of the ninth to squeak by host Oakland in Las Vegas.

Nick Martini’s RBI triple provided the winning run. The Reds’ Spencer Steer went 3-for-3 with a homer and three runs scored, while the Athletics’ JJ Bleday went 3-for-4 with two runs.
