Jarren Duran hit a leadoff home run and scored a run in the seventh inning to help the Boston Red Sox to a 6-4 win over the visiting Detroit Tigers on Wednesday in Fort Myers, Fla.
Boston right-hander Richard Fitts gave up three runs on six hits in four innings, while left-hander Justin Wilson (1-1) went a scoreless inning. Veteran right-hander Liam Hendriks allowed a run on two hits in the ninth for his first save of the spring
The Tigers’ Riley Greene hit his second home run of the spring in the top of the fifth for a 3-2 lead. The Red Sox went up for good in the seventh inning on Roman Anthony’s sacrifice fly and Tristan Cassas’ RBI single.
Casey Mize’s fifth start of the spring for the Tigers wasn’t as dominating as his first four, but he went 4 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Detroit left-hander Andrew Chafin (1-1) gave up two runs on three hits in one inning.
Rays 5, Pirates 2
Eloy Jimenez and Danny Jansen each hit home runs and Josh Lowe had three hits as Tampa Bay defeated visiting Pittsburgh at Port Charlotte, Fla.
Rays right-hander Zack Littell (1-1) gave up two runs on eight hits over six innings, with five strikeouts and no walks, to earn the win. Tampa Bay scored three runs in the second inning to take control.
Ji Hwan Bae went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Pirates while raising his spring batting average to .444 (16 for 36). Pittsburgh left-hander Andrew Heaney (0-3) gave up three runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings, with two strikeouts and no walks.
Cardinals 7, Nationals 1
Alec Burleson and Victor Scott II each hit home runs and Lars Nootbaar had two hits and two runs scored as St. Louis scored in each of the first five innings and cruised to the victory over visiting Washington in Jupiter, Fla.
Cardinals left-hander Steven Matz (2-0) gave up one run on four hits over six innings.
Dylan Crews scored the lone run for the Nationals when he came home on a wild pitch by Matz. Washington right-hander Jake Irvin (0-1) was rocked for six runs on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Yankees 9, Phillies 7
Jazz Chisholm, Cody Bellinger, Pablo Reyes and Ben Rice all hit home runs as New York grabbed an eight-run lead and held on to defeat Philadelphia in Clearwater, Fla.
Yankees right-hander Marcus Stroman (2-1) went three scoreless innings with three strikeouts and right-hander Cade Austin pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save.
Brandon Marsh hit his first home run of the spring for the Phillies, while right-hander Taijuan Walker (1-1) was roughed up for six runs on nine hits over 3 2/3 innings.
Athletics 8, Guardians 3 (ss)
Brent Rooker hit a two-run homer in a three-RBI game, Tyler Soderstrom also socked a two-run shot and the visiting A’s beat a Cleveland split squad in Goodyear, Ariz.
Soderstrom and Lawrence Butler each had two hits for the Athletics. Noah Murdock closed out the win with two perfect innings.
Bo Naylor, Will Brennan and Juan Brito had run-scoring hits for the Guardians. Cleveland starter Gavin Williams allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Brewers 5, White Sox 4
Tyler Black’s three-run homer in the eighth inning capped Milwaukee’s comeback from a 4-0 deficit to a win over visiting Chicago in Phoenix.
Christian Yelich and Joey Ortiz each produced two hits for the Brewers. Starter Aaron Civale blanked the White Sox for four innings but was tagged for four runs (three earned) without retiring a batter in the fifth.
Michael A. Taylor hit a two-run double for the White Sox, who got two hits from Lenyn Sosa. Shane Smith fired four shutout innings.
Angels 5, Guardians (ss) 3
Tyler Anderson tossed six innings of one-run ball as host Los Angeles defeated a Cleveland split squad in Tempe, Ariz.
Anderson gave up six hits, walked none and struck out three. Jo Adell paced the Angels’ offense with three hits, including a two-run homer.
Brayan Rocchio went 3-for-4, Gabriel Arias added two hits and Micah Pries cracked a two-run homer for the Guardians. Logan Allen permitted one run in 4 2/3 innings while fanning six.
Diamondbacks 1, Rockies 0
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went 2-for-3 and drove in the only run with a third-inning single as host Arizona topped Colorado in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Jordan Montgomery, the first of seven Diamondbacks pitchers, threw 2 2/3 innings. Conor Grammes worked the ninth inning for his second save of the spring.
Brenton Doyle and Jordan Beck each had two of the Rockies’ six hits. Jake Woodford (0-2) gave up one run in 2 2/3 innings.
Mariners 3, Rangers 2
Solo homers from Jorge Polanco and J.P. Crawford guided Seattle to a win over visiting Texas in Peoria, Ariz.
Mariners starter Emerson Hancock (1-2) delivered four innings of one-run ball, striking out four. Shintari Fujinami tossed a scoreless ninth inning for the save.
Corey Seager hit a solo homer for the Rangers. Jacob deGrom (1-1) allowed two runs on four hits in four innings.
Mets 8, Astros 2
Pete Alonso belted a three-run homer as visiting New York downed Houston in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Brandon Nimmo, Brett Baty and Tyrone Taylor each delivered two hits for the Mets. David Peterson fired five shutout innings, walking three and striking out four.
Cam Smith had a two-run homer among his two hits for the Astros. Ronel Blanco yielded three runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Braves 4, Yankees 0
Spencer Schwellenbach threw six strong innings and struck out 10 as Atlanta shut out New York in Tampa.
Schwellenbach (1-0) gave up just two hits and one walk. Amos Willingham handled the next 2 1/3 innings, exiting with two on and one out in the ninth. Hayden Harris took over and struck out the next two batters to earn the save.
Austin Riley and Patrick Clohisy homered for the Braves. Yankees starter Carlos Carrasco tossed five shutout innings.
Giants 3, Royals 1
Logan Porter hit an RBI double and Sabin Ceballos added a run-scoring singles in the ninth inning as San Francisco earned a road win over Kansas City in Surprise, Ariz.
A homer by Tyler Fitzgerald accounted for the Giants’ other run. San Francisco starter Jordan Hicks yielded one run on three hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Bobby Witt Jr. smacked his fourth homer of the spring for the Royals. Kansas City starter Michael Wacha struck out eight while permitting one run in five innings.
