MLB News: Spring training roundup: Prospects help Red Sox hold off Tigers

Marcelo Mayer went 3-for-3 with an RBI triple and a two-run home run, Roman Anthony added the go-ahead double and the visiting Boston Red Sox hung on to beat the Detroit Tigers’ split squad in spring training action Thursday in Lakeland, Fla.

Anthony and Mayer are considered two of the top prospects in baseball, as is their teammate Kristian Campbell, who scored a run. Anthony’s double in the fifth inning put Boston ahead for good, and David Hamilton and Trayce Thompson added home runs in the sixth to provide crucial insurance, as the Tigers rallied from a 6-1 deficit to make it a one-run game.

Justice Bigbie had an RBI in a three-run Detroit seventh and then hit a run-scoring single in the ninth before Boston’s Hobie Harris struck out Max Anderson looking to end the game.

Red Sox starter Quinn Priester allowed two hits and two walks in two innings before Josh Winckowski (1-0) got the decision in two innings of relief. Jack Flaherty started for the Tigers and finished with one run on one hit and two walks with two strikeouts. Kenta Maeda (0-1) yielded three runs and five hits in three relief innings while fanning five.

Tigers 7, Rays 7

Tres Barrera, Tanner Murray and Tristan Peters each hit solo home runs in the bottom of the ninth for Tampa Bay to earn a come-from-behind tie with visiting Detroit in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Barrera, Murray, Peters and Jake Mangum each had two hits in the Rays’ 14-hit attack. Starter Mike Vasil lasted 1 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out two.

Spencer Torkelson opened the scoring with a two-run shot for the Tigers and Tomas Nido went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Starter Matt Manning went 2 2/3 frames and gave up one run on four hits and two walks, fanning two.

Yankees 7, Phillies 7

Philadelphia drew a hit by pitch and three consecutive walks in the bottom of the ninth, the last one scoring Oscar Mercado to force a tie with visiting New York in Clearwater, Fla.

Johan Rojas and Rafael Lantigua homered for the Phillies in the back-and-forth game. Zack Wheeler started for the hosts and struck out four with just one hit over two innings.

Anthony Volpe and Oswaldo Cabrera went deep for the Yankees before prospect Tyler Hardman put the Yankees ahead 7-6 in the eighth with a three-run shot. Starter Carlos Rodon was tagged for three runs on four hits while striking out four in 2 2/3 innings, and reliever Cade Austin was responsible for the disastrous ninth.

Mets 5, Astros 0

Converted reliever Clay Holmes went three innings in his second start of spring, yielding one hit and one walk while fanning two, as host New York blanked Houston in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Ryan Clifford and Brett Baty each provided two-run home runs in the sixth inning for the Mets, with reliever TJ Shook (1-0) picking up the win with one out of relief.

New Astros first baseman Christian Walker supplied two of the team’s four hits. Starter Colton Gordon struck out three with one hit over two innings, and Miguel Ullola (0-1) surrendered all five runs on three hits and two walks in 1 2/3 frames.

Cardinals 8, Marlins 4

Trade candidate Nolan Arenado hit a three-run homer and a double for St. Louis in a win over visiting Miami in Jupiter, Fla.

Willson Contreras broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the second with a single to score Victor Scott II. Starter Andre Pallante pitched one-plus inning and gave up all four Marlins runs in the top of the second before Matthew Liberatore (1-0) pitched two perfect innings.

Andrew Pintar hit a two-run single and Xavier Edwards and Matt Mervis added RBIs in the Marlins’ second-inning uprising after St. Louis’ four-run first off starter Cal Quantrill. Valente Bellozo (0-1) threw two innings of relief.

Pirates 12, Twins 1

Nick Solak went 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs and an RBI as visiting Pittsburgh hammered Minnesota in Fort Myers, Fla.

Jack Suwinski drove in runs on a single in the second inning and a double in the fourth before the Pirates poured on three runs in the sixth and another five in the eighth. Starter Caleb Ferguson (1-0) scattered one run and five hits in two innings, fanning three.

The Twins’ only run came when Ferguson hit Matt Wallner with a pitch with the bases loaded in the second. Ty France went 2-for-2 to lead Minnesota’s offense while starter Pablo Lopez (0-1) allowed three runs on four hits and two walks with four Ks in two innings.

Orioles 11, Blue Jays 8

Ramon Urias delivered a two-run shot and Tyler O’Neill had a three-run blast in a seven-run second inning for host Baltimore in a victory over Toronto in Sarasota, Fla.

Nine different Orioles had one hit apiece, including Sam Basallo’s solo homer in the seventh. Roansy Contreras (1-0), the second of nine pitchers, threw 1 1/3 spotless innings.

Orelvis Martinez and Myles Straw had two-run singles for the Blue Jays, and Charles McAdoo cut the deficit in half with a three-run bomb in the ninth. Starter Easton Lucas (0-1) went 1 2/3 innings and gave up three runs off three hits and two walks.

Angels 4, Cubs 4

Kyren Paris hit a game-tying, two-run homer in the top of the ninth as visiting Los Angeles drew with Chicago in Mesa, Ariz.

Tim Anderson also went deep for the Angels, who got three perfect innings with three strikeouts from starter Caden Dana.

The Cubs tied the game 2-2 in the fifth on Dansby Swanson’s RBI double and Carson Kelly’s run-scoring single. Jonathon Long hit a pinch-hit, two-run double to put them ahead in the eighth.

Diamondbacks 3, Reds 3

Host Cincinnati used a three-run eighth inning to come from behind and tie Arizona in Goodyear, Ariz.

The Reds scored on Cam Collier’s grounder to first, Blake Dunn’s infield single and Tyler Callihan’s sacrifice fly. Both teams finished with seven hits, with no player recording more than one.

Ildemaro Vargas had an RBI double and Grae Kessinger also drove in a run for the Diamondbacks.

White Sox 4, Guardians 2

Lenyn Sosa went 2-for-3 with a two-run double as host Chicago got past Cleveland in Phoenix.

Reliever Jake Eder (1-0) struck out two in the fourth inning after Martin Perez fanned two and allowed one hit in the first two innings. Brandon Drury scored two runs for the White Sox.

Will Wilson (single) and Micah Pries (double) brought in the Guardians’ runs. Triston McKenzie (0-1) pitched two-thirds of an inning of relief and had control issues, walking five and allowing three runs.

Athletics 6, Padres 4

Darell Hernaiz hit a three-run triple to cap a five-run eighth inning as the A’s came back to beat visiting San Diego in Mesa, Ariz.

A’s starter Luis Severino allowed one run on one hit (a homer) with one strikeout over two innings. Reliever J.T. Ginn (1-1) pitched two innings and worked around one run, two hits and two walks.

Trenton Brooks and Forrest Wall hit solo homers for the Padres. Starter Matt Waldron struck out two with one hit and one walk over three innings, but Tom Cosgrove (0-1) was dinged for four runs on three hits and a walk while getting just one out in the eighth.

Rangers 8, Mariners 0

Jake Burger and Sebastian Walcott each homered and finished with two RBIs as host Texas blanked Seattle’s split squad in Surprise, Ariz.

Starter Tyler Mahle (1-1) threw three innings and yielded just two hits with one strikeout. The Rangers used just four relievers to finish the day, as the staff held Seattle to five hits and one walk.

Tyler Locklear and Harry Ford each went 2-for-2 for the Mariners. Starter Jhonathan Diaz (0-2) was tagged for one run on four hits in two innings. He struck out two.

Brewers 12, Royals 5

Jorge Alfaro, Joshua Adamczewski and Zavier Warren all belted homers for Milwaukee, which had 15 hits in its win over visiting Kansas City in Phoenix.

Alfaro’s home run went for three runs while the others scored two apiece. Ramon Rodriguez went 2-for-2 with a two-run single for the Brewers. The win went to reliever Aaron Ashby (1-1), who pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings and struck out three but allowed two runs, two walks and two hit-by-pitches.

Bobby Witt Jr. bashed his first homer of the spring for the Royals. Reliever Thomas Hatch (0-1) was dinged for four runs on four hits and two walks in 1 1/3 frames.

Rockies 2, Dodgers 0

Ezequiel Tovar and Hunter Goodman hit RBI doubles to account for all the scoring in Colorado’s shutout of visiting Los Angeles in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Bradley Blalock, the Rockies’ starter, rang up five strikeouts in his two innings before Ryan Rolison (1-0) was credited with the win. Thairo Estrada went 2-for-3.

Dodgers reliever Kirby Yates (0-1), the fifth of their nine pitchers, gave up the first run and allowed two hits, a walk and two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning.

Giants 6, Mariners 4

David Villar broke an eighth-inning tie with a single and Grant McCray added an RBI bunt single to lift San Francisco over host Seattle in Peoria, Ariz.

The Giants led 4-1 before Miguel Diaz (1-0) blew the save in the seventh, giving up an RBI double to Jared Sundstrom and a two-run single to Luis Suisbel.

Ryan Hawks (0-1) surrendered two runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning in the eighth inning. The Mariners had just five hits, including Ryan Bliss’ RBI triple.

Braves 4, Nationals 3

Pinch runner Patrick Clohisy scored on a wild pitch to break a tie in the top of the ninth and Atlanta hung on to beat host Washington in Palm Beach, Fla.

Daison Acosta (0-1) gave up a double to Adam Zebrowski before throwing the fateful wild pitch. Ryan Bourassa (1-0) was the pitcher of record for the Braves and Rob Griswold worked around a hit in the bottom of the ninth for the save.

Cal Conley went 2-for-2 with a run for the Braves, who were out-hit 9-7. Robert Hassell III was 3-for-3 with a run for the Nationals, who tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on Trey Lipscomb’s bases-loaded walk.
