Former No. 1 overall pick Henry Davis clubbed his second homer in as many games as the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Detroit Tigers 7-3 on Saturday afternoon in Lakeland, Fla.
Davis, the top pick of the 2021 draft, hit a solo shot in the top of the first to continue an impressive start to spring training. He is 5-for-13 with two homers and six RBIs through five games.
Matt Gorski also went deep and Jack Suwinski headlined a five-run fifth with a two-run single for the Pirates. Brady Feigl (1-0) pitched just one-third of an inning but still managed to get the win.
Andy Ibanez had a solo home run for Detroit, which got its other two runs from a pair of walks with the bases loaded.
Red Sox 4, Nationals 2
Tanner Houck allowed just one hit across three innings of scoreless relief as host Boston got the best of Washington in Fort Myers, Fla.
Houck (1-0) walked one and struck out five after Brayan Bello started and surrendered two runs on one hit across three innings. Cutter Coffey and Tyler Miller hit home runs as the Red Sox overcame an early 2-0 deficit.
Riley Adams had an RBI single for the Nationals. Cole Henry (0-2) was tagged with the loss, permitting three runs on four hits in two innings.
Astros 7, Cardinals 1
Cristian Javier scattered a pair of walks across three hitless innings to guide Houston past visiting St. Louis in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Javier (1-0) fanned three before turning things over to six relievers who combined to allow just one run on six hits. Miguel Palma hit a two-run blast for the Astros.
The Cardinals’ lone run came on Nick Raposo’s RBI groundout in the seventh.
Red Sox 3, Rays 2
Joe Dunand hit a go-ahead solo shot in the eighth as Boston earned a split-squad victory over host Tampa Bay in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Rob Refsnyder put the Red Sox ahead 2-1 in the sixth with a solo home run of his own, but the Rays drew even in the seventh thanks to Nick Meyer’s run-scoring double. Colby White (0-1) surrendered Dunand’s game-winning long ball.
Tampa Bay finished with five hits and went just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Phillies 3, Twins 2
Felix Reyes ripped a go-ahead two-run double in the seventh that allowed Philadelphia to edge visiting Minnesota in Clearwater, Fla.
Nick Castellanos went 1-for-2 with a solo home run for the Phillies, who utilized eight pitchers, including Andrew Bellatti. Bellatti (1-0) walked one and struck out one during a scoreless inning of relief.
Brooks Lee had an RBI double and Ryan Jeffers homered for the Twins.
Orioles 7, Yankees 3
Baltimore scored seven unanswered runs to open the game to defeat visiting New York in Sarasota, Fla.
Kyle Stowers smacked a two-run blast and Austin Hays added a solo shot to headline the Orioles’ rally. Cole Irvin got the start and threw three scoreless innings and Dillon Tate (1-0) got the win with an innings of relief.
Yankees right-hander Marcus Stroman pitched four innings, scattering two hits and fanning three without allowing a run. Brandon Lockridge ripped a two-run single for New York.
Braves 6, Blue Jays 2
Jordan Luplow had a two-run homer and Atlanta topped host Toronto in Dunedin, Fla.
Braves starter Reynaldo Lopez improved to 1-1 by allowing just two hits in three scoreless innings. He walked one and struck out three. Drake Baldwin cleared the bases with a double in the eighth for Atlanta.
Danny Jansen and Zach Britton each had an RBI double to account for the Blue Jays’ runs. Chris Bassitt (0-1) was hit around for three runs on three hits in three innings.
Marlins 4, Mets 1
Six pitchers combined to allow just four hits as host Miami knocked off New York in Jupiter, Fla.
Eury Perez (1-0) set the tone for the Marlins with 2 1/3 innings of no-hit ball. He issued one walk and recorded two strikeouts. Patrick Monteverde tallied a six-out save, and Jazz Chisholm Jr., Avisail Garcia and Curt Casali had run-scoring doubles for Miami.
The Mets didn’t push a run across until Brett Baty homered in the seventh.
Royals 13, Guardians 12
Nate Eaton capped a four-run top of the ninth with a go-ahead two-run homer as the visiting Royals rallied past the Guardians in Goodyear, Ariz.
Joe Gray Jr. started the uprising with a sacrifice fly and Peyton Wilson brought home another run with a fielder’s choice before Eaton’s decisive long ball. Eaton went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs.
The Guardians appeared to be on their way to a victory after Daniel Schneemann’s three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth put Kansas City up 10-6. Cleveland went deep five times on the day.
Dodgers 8, Cubs 5
Host Los Angeles got to Shota Imanaga in his spring training debut to hand Chicago a loss in Glendale, Ariz.
Imanaga (0-1), who signed a four-year, $53 million deal with the Cubs this offseason, was roughed up for three runs on three hits in 2 1/3 innings. He did, however, fan five.
Andy Pages connected against Imanaga for a three-run shot in the second. Matt Mervis and Mike Tauchman left the yard for Chicago.
Padres 3, Giants 2
Matthew Batten had a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth that propelled visiting San Diego to a win over San Francisco in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Jeremiah Estrada (1-0) worked around two walks in 1 1/3 innings to nab the win. The Padres led 2-0 after Bryce Johnson scored on a wild pitch and Graham Pauley clubbed a solo shot, but the Giants stormed back in the eighth.
Chase Pinder had a run-scoring single for San Francisco, which left 11 men on base.
Rangers 14, White Sox 3
Wyatt Langford went 3-for-4 with two homers and five RBIs in host Texas’ drubbing of Chicago in Surprise, Ariz.
Jared Walsh added a pair of RBIs, helping Rangers starter Jon Gray (1-0) secure an easy victory. Gray permitted one hit in three scoreless innings. He walked two and struck out four.
The White Sox watched as Texas scored all 14 of its runs before Chicago could even push across one. Mark Payton broke the shutout in the seventh, pulling a solo home run to right. He then added a two-RBI single in the eighth.
Angels 4, Diamondbacks 1
Los Angeles scored four unanswered runs to dispatch visiting Arizona in Tempe, Ariz.
Albert Almora Jr. gave the Diamondbacks a 1-0 edge in the second with a sacrifice fly, a lead Arizona would hold until the bottom of the sixth. That’s when Aaron Hicks cleared the left-center-field fence, making it 1-1.
Chad Wallach provided the game-winning run by scoring on a fielding error in the seventh. Andrew Saalfrank (0-1) was un unlucky loser, allowing an unearned run in one inning.
Rockies 10, Reds 4
Ezequiel Tovar smacked a grand slam as part of a 2-for-2, five-RBI day that boosted host Colorado to a victory against Cincinnati in Scottsdale.
The Reds’ Elly De La Cruz, the second batter of the game, launched a 470-foot home run, but it was all Rockies from there. Colorado scored the next eight runs, pinning the loss on Cincinnati right-hander Hunter Greene (1-1).
Greene’s line consisted of two runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts in three innings.
Athletics 12, Mariners 8
Seth Brown, Daz Cameron and Kyle McCann each drove in a pair of runs and visiting Oakland held off Seattle in Peoria, Ariz.
The Athletics did most of their damage in a five-run sixth that included a run-scoring single from Cameron and an RBI double from Carlos Perez. Oakland starter Mitch Spence (1-0) was stellar, giving up just one hit in three scoreless frames.
Eleven pitchers saw action for Seattle, which scored three times in the eighth and twice in the ninth before seeing its comeback attempt come up short. Brian Anderson had a bases-clearing double in the eighth for the Mariners.
Dodgers 11, Brewers 3
James Outman, Miguel Vargas and Gavin Lux finished with three hits apiece, leading Los Angeles to a split-squad rout of host Milwaukee in Phoenix.
Outman and Vargas each went 3-for-3, while Lux went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Outman had a homer, three RBIs, two runs and a walk as the Dodgers stacked up 13 hits.
Eric Haase and Sal Frelick had run-scoring singles for the Brewers, who went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Janson Junk (0-1) yielded three runs on five hits in two innings.
