Shohei Ohtani hit a two-run home run in his return to his home country and the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers earned a 5-1 victory over Japan’s Yomiuri Giants on Saturday at Tokyo.
Michael Conforto and Teoscar Hernandez also hit home runs for the Dodgers, who are set to open the regular season in Japan on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs. The Dodgers and Cubs also will play on Wednesday.
Dodgers left-hander Justin Wrobleski had three strikeouts over two scoreless innings as the Los Angeles starter. Dodgers pitchers gave up a run on five hits with 11 strikeouts and one walk.
Naoki Yoshikawa had an RBI single in the sixth inning for the Giants, who have won 22 Japan Series titles after winning nine titles in the Japanese Baseball League.
Astros 6, Marlins 4
Shortstop Jeremy Pena hit a grand slam to fuel a six-run sixth inning host Houston got past Miami at Palm Beach, Fla.
Astros starter Framber Valdez fired four scoreless innings, striking out six while allowing just three hits and a walk. Nick Hernandez (1-1) claimed the win despite allowing a run in his 1/3 of an inning. Jose Altuve went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the leadoff spot.
Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara also posted four scoreless innings as he amassed two strikeouts with two hits and one walk. Declan Cronin (0-1) took the loss as he surrendered five runs in relief. Nick Fortes and Otto Lopez poked two hits apiece and Agustin Ramirez popped a solo homer in the ninth.
Braves 7, Red Sox 3
Reigning National League Cy Young winner Chris Sale struck out nine in six innings to pace visiting Atlanta over Boston in Fort Myers, Fla.
Sale (1-1) gave up four hits and two runs – solo homers by Alex Bregman and Triston Casas – during his longest stint this spring. The Braves racked up 14 hits, which included three apiece by Nick Allen and Conner Capel.
Quinn Priester (1-1) started for the Red Sox and allowed six hits, three walks and three runs in his 2 2/3-inning stint. Casas accounted for two of the team’s six hits. Jarren Duran added a double.
Pirates 15, Orioles 5
Henry Davis cracked a grand slam in the eighth to cap the late surge that sent Pittsburgh to the win over visiting Baltimore in Bradenton, Fla.
Oneil Cruz, Jack Suwinski, Nick Gonzales and Ji Hwan Bae added two hits apiece for the Pirates while Cruz swiped his fifth and sixth bases. Starter Carmen Mlodzinski allowed one run and struck out three in his three innings.
Dylan Carlson (2-for-2) led off the game with a homer for the Orioles. Rookie Coby Mayo added a single and double in three trips. Starter Thaddeus Ward gave up five hits, three walks and four runs in his 2 2/3 innings, but Gregory Soto (0-1) took the loss for allowing a run in the fourth.
Phillies 2, Tigers 2
Detroit’s Tarik Skubal and Philadelphia’s Zack Wheeler each allowed two runs over five innings to trigger the tie in Clearwater, Fla.
Skubal fanned seven without a walk for the visiting Tigers but gave up six hits and two runs. Colt Keith collected two of Detroit’s three hits, which included a two-run double off Wheeler in the first.
Wheeler struck out three while allowing three hits, one walk and two unearned runs for the Phillies. Bryce Harper and Brandon Marsh posted two hits apiece while Harper and Trea Turner notched RBIs.
Rays 7, Yankees 7
Tres Barrera drilled a two-run single with two outs in the ninth to cap a three-run inning and give host Tampa Bay the tie with New York in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Rays starter Drew Rasmussen struck out six with no walks over four innings but allowed five hits and three runs. Jose Caballero and Kenneth Piper poked two hits and scored one run apiece.
Jasson Dominguez went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple and Jorbit Vivas rapped three hits for the Yankees. Starter Will Warren fanned four with no walks over four innings but also allowed five hits and three runs.
Cardinals 9, Blue Jays 5
Alex Burleson and Lars Nootbaar cracked home runs as host St. Louis never trailed against Toronto in Jupiter, Fla.
The Cardinals lashed 16 hits as Brendan Donovan (3-for-4), Willson Contreras, Nolan Arenado, Burleson and Nootbaar each enjoyed multiple-hit days. Starter Andre Pallante (2-0) stretched out to five innings and posted five strikeouts, two walks, six hits and three runs (two earned).
Robert Brooks and Will Robertson provided ninth-inning homers for the Blue Jays, who also got two hits from Ernie Clement. Starter Bowden Francis gave up seven hits and three runs while fanning five during his 3 2/3 innings. Brendon Little (1-1) allowed two runs in the fifth to take the loss.
Guardians 7, Royals 5
Jose Ramirez delivered his first home run of the spring as visiting Cleveland rallied to beat a Kansas City split squad in Surprise, Ariz.
Kyle Manzardo, Gabriel Arias and Angel Martinez also homered for the Guardians as they scored all their runs in the final four innings to erase a 4-0 deficit. Emmanuel Clase (1-0) claimed the win with a scoreless sixth while starter Triston McKenzie allowed six hits, four runs and no walks with four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.
Jonathan India and Vinnie Pasquantino homered off McKenzie for the Royals. Starter Kyle Bubic threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings while fanning five and scattering three hits and one walk. Thomas Hatch (0-2) allowed four runs on three homers to take the loss.
White Sox 2, Rockies 1
Tristan Gray doubled in the tying run, then scored the winning run on Jordan Sprinkle’s single as host Chicago walked it off against Colorado in Phoenix.
White Sox starter Martin Perez struck out six over four innings as he allowed five hits, two walks and one run. Owen White (1-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings. Gray, Sprinkle, Korey Lee and Michael A. Taylor notched two hits apiece.
Ezequiel Tovar (2-for-3) clocked a first-inning homer to account for the Rockies’ run. Hunter Goodman and Zac Veen each added three hits. Starter Antonio Senzatela blanked Chicago over 4 2/3 innings as he scattered seven hits and one walk.
Royals 13, Reds 7
Cam Devanney’s two-run single capped a five-run fifth as Kansas City’s split squad took care of host Cincinnati in Goodyear, Ariz.
The Royals racked up 16 hits as Devanney, Jac Caglianone, Michael Massey and Nick Loftin contributed two hits apiece. Starter Michael Lorenzen (1-0) went four innings to take the win. He gave up four hits and two runs while fanning four.
Reds starter Hunter Greene also went four innings and gave up five hits and two runs while fanning six. Austin Wynns and Alfredo Alcantara drove in two runs apiece.
Giants 6, Mariners 2
Logan Webb allowed one hit and no earned runs over five innings as host San Francisco handled Seattle in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Webb (3-0) yielded one hit, one walk and two unearned runs while posting five strikeouts. Heliot Ramos went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and his first homer of the spring, while Willy Adames and Jerar Encarnacion each also went 2-for-3 with a homer.
Mariners starter Logan Gilbert (0-1) gave up five hits and three runs over his four innings. Seattle managed just three singles while Dylan Moore drew the lone walk and claimed the game’s lone stolen base.
Rangers 4, Athletics 3
Corey Seager drove in all of Texas’ runs with a pair of two-run doubles as the host Athletics split squad took the loss in Mesa, Ariz.
The Rangers split their innings among nine relievers and Chris Martin (1-0) claimed the win by tossing a perfect inning. Chad Wallach (2-for-3) and Marcus Semien each added a double.
Athletics starter Luis Severino (0-2) surrendered four hits and three runs over his four-inning stint. J.T. Ginn fanned seven over four innings. JJ Bleday produced two singles and one RBI.
Brewers 8, Athletics 0
Rhys Hoskins banged his sixth homer of the spring and William Contreras added a three-run blast as host Milwaukee’s split squad rolled over the Athletics’ split squad in Phoenix.
Brewers starter Freddy Peralta (1-1) breezed through 5 1/3 innings as he scattered five hits, walked none and whiffed four. Hoskins, Contreras and Cooper Pratt produced two hits apiece.
Athletics starter Mitch Spence (0-1) allowed seven hits and seven runs over 3 2/3 innings. Miguel Andujar went 2-for-4 with a double.
Brewers 4, Angels 0
Leadoff man Isaac Collins went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, one run and one stolen base to lead visiting Milwaukee’s split squad over Los Angeles in Tempe, Ariz.
Brewers starter Tobias Myers (3-0) picked up the win, but he left in the second inning with a left oblique injury. Garrett Mitchell complemented Collins at the top of the order with two hits and a walk.
Angels starter Jack Kochanowicz (1-1) allowed six hits, three walks and three runs over 3 1/3 innings. Tim Anderson notched a double in three trips, which marked the lone extra-base hit among Los Angeles’ five safeties.
Diamondbacks 9, White Sox 8
Trey Mancini blasted a 423-foot homer with two outs in the ninth to turn host Arizona’s 8-7 deficit into a walk-off win over Chicago’s split squad in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Diamondbacks starter Corbin Burnes allowed one run over four innings as he fanned four without a walk. Josh Naylor added a homer for the Diamondbacks while Randal Grichuk cracked a bases-loaded double.
Mario Camilletti and Wilfred Veras drove in two runs apiece in the eighth inning to rally the White Sox. Starter Sean Burke allowed three hits, two walks and two runs with three strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings.
Padres 8, Mariners 3
Gavin Sheets went 3-for-4 and smacked his sixth homer of the spring to guide visiting San Diego over Seattle’s split squad in Peoria, Ariz.
Connor Joe and Mason McCoy each added two hits and three RBIs for the Padres. Starter Michael King fanned five in his four-inning stint, but allowed three hits, two walks and three runs.
Mariners starter Luis Castillo struck out four in 4 2/3 innings, but gave up five hits and two runs. Randy Arozarena poked his first homer of the spring while going 2-for-3. Ryan Bliss added two hits and two runs.
Twins 4, Braves 0
Simeon Woods Richardson yielded just one hit in four scoreless innings as visiting Minnesota allowed just four hits to Atlanta’s split squad in North Port, Fla.
Ryan Jeffers and Carson McCusker contributed doubles for the Twins while Eiberson Castellano struck out three in two innings to earn the save.
Braves starter AJ Smith-Shawver (0-1) posted eight strikeouts with no walks in his four innings, but he allowed six hits and two runs. Michael Harris II went 2-for-3 and Austin Riley poked a double.
Nationals 4, Mets 1
Jose Tena hit a two-run double to provide a little breathing room for host Washington against New York in Palm Beach, Fla.
Nationals starter Mitchell Parker (1-0) walked four in five innings but gave up just two hits and one run to get the win. Daylen Lyle contributed an RBI triple and Paul DeJong stroked an RBI double.
Mets starter Clay Holmes (1-1) allowed three hits and two runs in 4 1/3 innings. Pete Alonso drove in the lone run with a fielder’s choice. Juan Soto went 0-for-2 with a walk against his first professional organization.
