Colorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez will miss the remainder of the season after being diagnosed with a stress reaction in his right elbow, manager Bud Black said Thursday.
Also on Thursday, the Rockies placed Ryan Feltner on the 15-day injured list because of a strained right shoulder and recalled fellow right-hander Riley Pint from Triple-A Albuquerque.
Black said that Marquez’s injury was not due to the rebuilt ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. The skipper said Marquez is expected to recover in approximately six to eight weeks.
Marquez’s return following Tommy John surgery lasted all of just one start before he was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 22.
Marquez, 29, faced the New York Mets on July 14 in his first start since April 26, 2023, 16 days before he underwent surgery. In four innings, Marquez allowed three runs on five hits while walking four and striking out three on 70 pitches.
In that game, Marquez passed Jorge De La Rosa for the franchise lead in strikeouts with 986.
An All-Star in 2021, Marquez owns a 65-56 record with a 4.42 ERA in 177 appearances (174 starts) with the Rockies.
Feltner, 27, pitched the first inning of the host Rockies’ 5-3 loss to the New York Mets on Wednesday. After allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout, Feltner exited before the start of the second inning.
Feltner said that after his previous start on Aug. 1 at the Los Angeles Angels, he felt a little more sore than usual but expected to feel better. When he still felt soreness after the first inning, he was removed from the game.
“It was one of those things where it was getting worse, and I didn’t want to make it worse than worse,” Feltner said. “It was definitely not getting better, definitely not loosening up, and was tightening up on me.”
Feltner is 1-10 with a 5.00 ERA, 39 walks and 107 strikeouts in 122 1/3 innings over 23 starts this season. In parts of four seasons with Colorado, he is 7-24 with a 5.58 ERA, 107 walks and 235 strikeouts in 269 1/3 innings over 55 games (54 starts).
Pint, 26, appeared in one game for Colorado this season, allowing two runs on two hits, including a home run, in two-thirds of an inning for a 27.00 ERA. He is 2-0 with one save, a 3.10 ERA, 26 walks and 50 strikeouts in 29 innings over 25 games for Albuquerque.
