MLB News: Reports: Pete Alonso, Orioles finalizing 5-year, $155M deal

Five-time All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso and the Baltimore Orioles are finalizing a five-year, $155 million contract, multiple media outlets reported on Wednesday.

Per Spotrac, Alonso will become the second-highest-paid first baseman per yearly average ($31 million) behind only Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ($35.7 million).

The Orioles have yet to confirm the news on Alonso, whose first venture into free agency resulted in his return to the Mets on a two-year deal worth $54 million. He opted out of that contract at the end of last season and returned to the free-agent market.

Alonso, who turned 31 on Sunday, is the latest star to leave Queens, joining All-Star closer Edwin Diaz (Los Angeles Dodgers) and outfielder Brandon Nimmo (Texas Rangers).

Alonso spent all seven years of his major league career with the Mets, who selected him in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft out of Florida. He has displayed tremendous durability, playing in at least 152 games in all but the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign and drawn in for all 162 contests in both 2024 and 2025.

He bounced back from a pair of down years in 2025, recording career bests with a .272 batting average and 41 doubles, which led the National League. His 126 RBIs were second-best in the majors behind only Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber (132).

Alonso, who was the NL Rookie of the Year in 2019, has belted a franchise-best 264 career homers for the Mets. He also is a two-time Home Run Derby champion, winning the contest in 2019 and 2021.
