Free agent Matt Carpenter has agreed to a one-year contract with the San Diego Padres that includes a player option for 2024, according to multiple reports Tuesday.
A 12-year veteran, Carpenter hit .305 with 15 homers and 37 RBIs in 47 games for the New York Yankees last year before a broken left foot in early August ended his season.
Carpenter, 37, signed with the Yankees after being released by the Texas Rangers in May. He hit nine homers while batting .356 in July, helping the Yankees build a large American League East lead en route to winning the division title.
Carpenter, a .263 career hitter with an .825 OPS, is likely to see time at first base, second base and left field with San Diego.
Over 12 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals (2011-21) and Yankees (2022), Carpenter has 170 homers and 613 RBIs.
