Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah is seeking a second opinion on his elbow and is likely to miss “an extended period of time,” TSN reported Friday.
Manoah departed Wednesday’s 3-1 road win against the Chicago White Sox with two outs in the second inning due to discomfort in his right elbow. He underwent an MRI on Thursday.
The Blue Jays placed Manoah on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to May 30, announced the acquisition of right-hander Ryan Burr from the Philadelphia Phillies for cash and activated Burr.
“Kind of just felt really pinchy,” Manoah said after Wednesday’s game. “At that point, like mentally, I was just like, ‘Do I keep grinding through this and maybe make it worse, or just hand the ball to somebody else?’ ”
Manoah, 26, is 1-2 with a 3.70 ERA through five starts this season. He has struck out 26 batters and walked eight in 24 1/3 innings.
He is 29-20 with a 3.34 ERA in 75 starts since making his Toronto debut in 2021. Manoah made the All-Star team in 2022 and finished third in the American League Cy Young Award voting that year.
Burr, 30, last pitched in the major leagues with the Chicago White Sox in 2022. He underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum early in the season and was released by Chicago.
