The Chicago Cubs and veteran first baseman Eric Hosmer are in agreement on a contract, ESPN reported Wednesday.

The deal would be for the veteran’s minimum of $720,000. The San Diego Padres are on the hook for paying Hosmer $39 million over the next three years, the remainder of the eight-year, $144 million deal they signed him to ahead of the 2018 season.

The Red Sox released Hosmer on Dec. 22 after designating him for assignment the prior week. Hosmer was acquired from the San Diego Padres at the trade deadline last season. He batted .244 with four RBIs in 14 games for Boston.

Hosmer batted .272 with eight homers and 40 RBIs in 90 games for San Diego prior to the trade.

Hosmer was a star player for the Kansas City Royals earlier in his career, winning a World Series in 2015 and being named All-Star MVP in 2016.

Hosmer has a .277 career average with 196 homers and 879 RBIs in 1,658 games over 12 seasons with the Royals (2011-17), Padres (2018-22) and Red Sox.
