Rangers star shortstop Corey Seager exited Texas’ Tuesday game against the visiting Kansas City Royals in the fifth inning due to left hamstring tightness.
Seager pulled up on his way to second on a double to left field in the fifth inning. Seager walked off on his own power but was holding his hamstring. The team said he would continue to be evaluated.
“You hate to see it because he’s been on fire,” manager Bruce Bochy said after the game, an 8-5, 10-inning Rangers win. “I mean, he is just squaring up everything. … They will re-evaluate him. There’s some tightness there and we’ll see where we’re at (Wednesday).
“I haven’t had a chance to really talk to him, just real briefly after the game. But that’s your hottest hitter to be honest here just with how good he’s been swinging the bat.”
Seager is batting .359 with a 1.007 OPS through 11 games this season. He batted .245 with a .772 OPS, a career-high 33 home runs and 83 RBIs in 151 games last season, his first in Texas.
The 28-year-old has battled injuries throughout his career, including missing about a month with a hamstring injury in 2019 while with the Dodgers.
Josh Smith replaced Seager in the lineup on Tuesday.
“We do have some coverage until we get him back,” Bochy said of Seager. “Smitty does a really nice job there, and (Ezequiel) Duran showed a really nice ability to play short this spring, that’s why I put him there a lot, to give us coverage. But we don’t know how long (Corey may be out). I can answer that question better (Wednesday).”
