MLB News: Randy Vasquez, Padres shut out Nationals

Randy Vasquez and three relievers combined on a five-hit shutout and the visiting San Diego Padres beat the Washington Nationals 4-0 on Tuesday night.

Luis Arraez and Jurickson Profar hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth and Jackson Merrill had two hits and drove in two runs for the Padres, who have won three straight.

Vasquez (3-5) left the game after allowing a leadoff double in the seventh. He gave up four hits and did not walk a batter while striking out one in his six-plus innings.

Washington’s Juan Yepez doubled and singled to extend his hitting streak to 14 games since having his contract selected from Triple-A Rochester.

The Nationals went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and saw their three-game winning streak end. They were shut out for the 11th time this season.

Washington starter DJ Herz (1-4) lasted five innings and gave up two runs on five hits, two of them home runs. He struck out four and walked two.

Trey Lipscomb doubled leading off the Washington third. Jacob Young bunted him to third, but Vasquez retired the next two batters to escape the inning unscathed.

The Padres loaded the bases in the fourth. Xander Bogaerts singled with one out and Manny Machado walked. After Jake Cronenworth flied out, Ha-Seong Kim’s bunt single loaded the bases, but Herz struck out Merrill.

With two outs and no one on base in the San Diego fifth, Arraez homered to right-center and, on the next pitch, Profar homered over the visitors’ bullpen in left-center.

In the sixth, Machado led off with a double. With two outs, Merrill lined a single to right, scoring Machado to make it 3-0.

After Yepez doubled leading off the bottom of the seventh, Adrian Morejon relieved Vasquez. James Wood grounded into a fielder’s choice — with Yepez getting thrown out at third — and Keibert Ruiz later grounded into a double play.

San Diego added a run in the eighth on Merrill’s bases-loaded groundout after singles by Bogaerts and Machado and a walk to Cronenworth.
