MLB News: Pirates edge Giants in 10 innings for fifth straight win

On a day that began with one team acquiring a Rogers twin while the other traded one away, the Pittsburgh Pirates scored a 10-inning run without the benefit of a hit and held on to defeat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 to complete a three-game road sweep on Wednesday afternoon.

Neither Rogers brother was available for the series finale, with the left-handed Taylor having been dealt from the Cincinnati Reds to the Pirates shortly before the righty Tyler was traded from the Giants to the New York Mets.

Oneil Cruz began the 10th as Pittsburgh’s extra innings runner on second base and advanced to third on an infield out. Jack Suwinski then drew a walk to give the Pirates runner on the corners.

Giants reliever Ryan Walker (2-4) coaxed a comebacker out of Henry Davis. But Suwinski was running with the pitch, and Walker, unaware of what was transpiring, threw too late to second instead of getting an easy out at home on Cruz, who scored the difference-making run.

The Giants caught a break in the last of the 10th when Suwinski lost Casey Schmitt’s inning-opening fly ball in the sun, putting runners at first and second with no outs.

Mike Yastrzemski bunted the runners into scoring position, but Isaac Mattson (3-1) struck out Patrick Bailey and Heliot Ramos to complete the sweep.

Neither starting pitcher got a decision after effective outings.

The Pirates’ Mike Burrows limited the Giants to one run on three hits over six innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

The lone tally against Burrows came in the fourth, when the Giants opened the scoring on a two-out RBI single by Dominic Smith. Ramos and Willy Adames had singled to set the stage for Smith.

Giants starter Logan Webb struck out 11 in 5 2/3 innings, during which he served up just one run and five hits. He walked four.

The Pirates needed just three pitches in the fifth to tie the game after the Giants had scored in the last of the fourth. Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit Webb’s second offering of the fifth for a single and scored one pitch later when Spencer Horwitz doubled to center field.

Horwitz had his team’s only extra-base hit of the game, and added a single for the Pirates, who won their fifth in a row.

Smith had two singles for the Giants, whose six hits were all singles en route to a sixth straight loss in six outings on a just completed homestand.
