MLB News: Phillies 1B Rhys Hoskins: Offseason surgery ‘a little clean-up’

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins confirmed Monday that he had offseason surgery to repair a meniscus injury in his right knee.

Hoskins, 29, said he played with the injury the final two months of the 2022 season, including in the World Series, won by the Houston Astros.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

“Just a little clean-up,” Hoskins said, per MLB.com. “Just a little part sticking out the back that needed to be cleaned up.”

Hoskins said he is about 10 weeks removed from surgery. He’s scheduled to make his Grapefruit League debut on Friday.

“I was told anywhere between four to six weeks (for recovery),” Hoskins said. “We’re at week 10 or 11. I’ve been fully functional since I got here. I’ve been taking live ABs, just getting work in. The plan with the training staff was get here a little early, just get your baseball feet under you before we put you back in the mix. So that, plus how much we played last year, it made sense.”

Hoskins is entering his seventh season with the Phillies. In the 2022 regular season, he hit .246 with 30 home runs and 79 RBIs in 156 games. In the postseason, he batted only .159 but had six homers and 12 RBIs in 17 games.

Four of those home runs and seven of the RBIs came in the National League Championship Series, won by the Phillies in five games.

In 667 career games in Philadelphia, Hoskins has a .242 average with 588 hits, 148 home runs and 405 RBIs.
