The San Diego Padres recalled right-hander Randy Vasquez from Triple-A El Paso on Saturday and optioned right-hander Alek Jacob.
Vasquez, 25, was set to start in Saturday’s road game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was 4-7 with a 5.18 ERA in 19 starts with the Padres earlier this season. He is 6-9 with a 4.51 ERA in 30 appearances (24 starts) for the New York Yankees (2023) and Padres.
Vasquez gave up nine runs and 11 hits over 4 1/3 innings in an 11-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 31 in his last major league start.
Jacob, 26, had a 2.45 ERA in seven relief appearances for the Padres, who will open the National League playoffs on Tuesday in the wild-card round.
