Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run single off Luke Weaver with two outs in the eighth inning as the visiting San Diego Padres rallied for a 4-3 victory over the New York Yankees on Monday night in a game featuring two short weather delays and constant heavy rain.

The Padres won their sixth straight game by erasing a three-run deficit against Devin Williams and Weaver (0-1).

Williams, who was removed from his closer’s role April 27, loaded the bases in the eighth on a four-pitch walk to Luis Arraez after striking out Fernando Tatis Jr. as it started raining heavily again.

Weaver replaced Williams and Manny Machado lined a 1-1 fastball to left field for a two-run double to get San Diego within 3-2. On the next pitch, Bogaerts hit a cutter for a bloop single that fell in front of left fielder Cody Bellinger.

The Padres earned their ninth comeback win and second when trailing through seven innings after Tatis and manager Mike Shildt were ejected for arguing with home plate umpire Adrian Johnson.

San Diego mounted its comeback after getting three singles off New York starter Carlos Rodon in 6 2/3 innings and running itself out of the seventh inning. The Padres ended the seventh when Luis Campusano was thrown out at the plate trying to score when reliever Fernando Cruz’s splitter bounced in front of catcher Austin Wells.

Ryan Bergert (1-0) kept the deficit at three by pitching a 1-2-3 seventh and earned his first career win when the Padres stormed back. Jeremiah Estrada worked around a single in the eighth and Robert Suarez struck out two in the ninth for his 14th save.

Trent Grisham hit a two-run homer off San Diego starter Nick Pivetta in the third. Paul Goldschmidt helped the Yankees manufacture their third run when he scored on Anthony Volpe’s sacrifice fly in the sixth, but the late collapse sent New York to its fifth loss in seven games.

Pivetta allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits in five-plus innings, exiting after Goldschmidt singled to lead off the sixth. The right-hander struck out five and walked four in an outing when his jersey became drenched during the fourth.

The start of the game was delayed 30 minutes and there was a 28-minute delay with two outs in the fourth as the Yankees batted.
