San Diego star third baseman Manny Machado departed the Padres’ Wednesday game at Anaheim, Calif., in the fourth inning due to a mild right hip flexor strain.
Machado is day-to-day, Padres manager Mike Shildt said after his team lost 3-2 to the Los Angeles Angels.
Machado reached on a fielder’s choice when he hit a grounder to third and Fernando Tatis Jr. was forced out at second. As he approached first, Machado seemed to feel something and after running through the bag, he stopped in short right field and leaned down from the waist.
Shildt and a trainer had lengthy discussions with Machado, who eventually walked toward first base. Shildt said a few more words to Machado, who suddenly veered to his left and walked to the Padres’ dugout.
Donovan Solano pinch-ran for Machado and remained in the game at third base.
Machado was 0-for-2 on Wednesday to drop his average to .249. He has six homers and 32 RBIs in 60 games this season.
