MLB News: Padres 2B Xander Bogaerts hurts shoulder vs. Braves

San Diego Padres second baseman Xander Bogaerts left the first game of Monday’s doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves in the third inning with a left shoulder injury.

He was not in the starting lineup for the second game. Manager Mike Shildt said Bogaerts would be re-evaluated on Tuesday.

The Padres termed Bogaerts’ injury as mild inflammation in the shoulder.

“He’s got stability — more than it looked like he might have — and he’s got some strength and some range of motion,” Shildt told reporters after the Padres’ 6-5 victory in Game 1. “More time will tell, but at least the initial feedback is initially best-case scenario.”

The Padres rallied from a five-run deficit to win the opener.

Bogaerts dove to his left to stop Ronald Acuna Jr.’s grounder from getting through the infield, but he grimaced as he rolled over at the end of the play, favoring his left shoulder. The four-time All-Star walked off the field with the trainer and Shildt after a brief examination on the field.

Bogaerts entered the game with a six-game hitting streak and had upped his average to .219. He went 0-for-1 in his only plate appearance before exiting. Bogaerts has four home runs and 23 runs this season.

He was replaced in the field and lineup by Tyler Wade.

In Game 2, Luis Arraez drew the start at second base.
