Baltimore Orioles starter Kyle Bradish took a 104 mph comebacker off his right foot in the second inning, ending his night early in a road start at the Texas Rangers on Monday night in Arlington, Texas.
Bradish sustained the injury during an at-bat against Rangers catcher Jonah Heim. The ball ricocheted off Bradish’s leg to first baseman Ryan Mountcastle, who made the out at first.
Bradish threw one warmup pitch before limping off.
Bradish was making his first start of the season, throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out two. Orioles left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe replaced Bradish on the mound.
In the third inning, Rangers outfielder Josh Smith was hit in the face with an 89 mph pitch from Coulombe. Smith exited under his own power but was taken to a local hospital.
“Rangers LF Josh Smith has been taken to an area hospital for further scans and testing on his face and jaw,” the Rangers said in a statement.
