Luis Guevara, a 19-year-old infielder in the Baltimore Orioles’ organization, died Sunday in a jet-ski collision in Sarasota, Fla.

The team issued a statement on Tuesday confirming Guevara’s death without mentioning the cause.

According to multiple reports, two watercraft, each with two people aboard, collided head-on off Lido Key.

The team Guevara played for as recently as Saturday, the Florida Complex League Orioles, postponed their games the past two days in the aftermath of Guevara’s death.

Mike Elias, Orioles executive vice president and general manager, said in a statement, “Luis was a beloved member of our organization, and we are devastated following his tragic passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and teammates — and we ask for their continued privacy during this difficult time.”

Guevara, a Venezuela native, was in his first season playing in the United States. He hit .243 with a .382 on-base percentage, no homers and nine RBIs in 24 games for Class-A Delmarva this year, briefly moving to Double-A Chesapeake, where he went 0-for-5 in two games.

In four games since moving to the Florida Complex League last week, he had gone 3-for-10.

Including two previous seasons for the Orioles’ affiliate in the Dominican Summer League, Guevara compiled a .281 minor league average with a .420 on-base percentage, no homers, 49 RBIs and 44 steals in 114 games.
