Turner finished 5-for-6 with a triple, three runs and two RBIs while Schwarber, who bats second, and Nos. 8 and 9 hitters Max Kepler and Bryson Stott each went 3-for-5. Schwarber now leads the majors with 109 RBIs.

Dennis Santana retired the side in the ninth inning to record his ninth save.

Messick, recalled before the game from Triple-A Columbus, gave up one run in 6 2/3 innings in his major league debut and was in line for the victory until Gurriel’s 424-foot homer off Cade Smith leading off the ninth.
Marlins 6, Cardinals 2
Sandy Alcantara pitched seven strong innings against the franchise that signed him as host Miami defeated St. Louis.
Alcantara (7-11), who signed with the Cardinals out of the Dominican Republic at age 17, allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while registering a season-high nine strikeouts. It was one of the few times this year Alcantara (6.04 ERA) has lived up to his Cy Young Award form of 2022. Perhaps all Alcantara needed was to face his old team. In eight career starts against St. Louis, Alcantara owns a 1.66 ERA.
Marlins rookie shortstop Maximo Acosta — who had been hitless in his first eight MLB at-bats — broke that streak with a 418-foot homer to center in the sixth. Heriberto Hernandez, another Marlins rookie, went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. The Braves’ former No. 7 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, lowered his ERA to 0.73 with 24 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings. The Atlanta bullpen finished the job, as Pierce Johnson pitched a scoreless eighth inning and closer Raisel Iglesias worked a perfect ninth inning to earn his 21st save. The Braves have won seven of their last eight games.
Atlanta scored its only run in the fourth inning on a fielding error by White Sox shortstop Colson Montgomery that allowed Marcell Ozuna to score. Chicago starter Martin Perez (1-3) was the hard-luck loser, throwing 5 1/3 innings and allowing one unearned run on three hits. The White Sox have lost six of their last seven games.
Athletics 4, Twins 2 (10 inn.)

A’s right-hander Michael Kelly (3-2) pitched two-thirds of an inning to earn the victory. He was one of five relievers to follow rookie starter J.T. Ginn, who allowed two runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked two.

The Dodgers got a scare when a comebacker by Orlando Arcia hit Ohtani in the right thigh during Colorado’s three-run fourth inning. Ohtani stayed in the game after throwing one warmup pitch but left for a pinch hitter in the eighth.
Ohtani (0-1) allowed five runs on nine hits, both season highs, and struck out three over four innings. Gordon (4-5) fanned just three and scattered four hits. His only mistake was a one-out home run by Hernandez, his 21st, in the sixth inning.
Padres 8, Giants 1
Gavin Sheets homered twice and JP Sears earned his first win with San Diego as the Padres routed visiting San Francisco.
Sears (8-10), making his second start with San Diego after being traded there along with closer Mason Miller at the trade deadline on July 31, gave up only four hits and a run in six innings. Landen Roupp (7-7) absorbed the loss after giving up five runs on five hits over 2 1/3 innings. He left the game in the bottom of the third after Ramon Laureano smoked a 95.7 mph liner off the back of his left knee.

The MLB-leading Brewers have lost three straight for the first time since May 7-10.

Hoby Milner (2-3) closed the door in the bottom of the frame and the Rangers prevailed after losing the first two of this four-game set. Marcus Semien had three hits with an RBI. After opener Caleb Boushley allowed a first-inning, three-run homer to Vinnie Pasquantino, Jacob Latz, Shawn Armstrong and Milner held the Royals to just three hits as Texas won for only the third time in 13 contests.
Kansas City rookie Noah Cameron labored while allowing two runs, three hits and three walks over 89 pitches through 4 2/3 innings for the Royals, who had won five straight and fell to 7-2 on their 10-game homestand. In the ninth, Sam Long (1-3) retired the first two batters, but a walk, a fielding error by first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino and an infield single loaded the bases for Higashioka, who roped Long’s pitch down the left field line to clear the bases.
