MLB News: Mets place INF Mark Vientos (wrist) on 10-day injured list

The New York Mets on Thursday placed infielder Mark Vientos on the 10-day injured list because of left wrist tendinitis.

The move, retroactive to Wednesday, is not expected to keep Vientos out of action for more than eight games. Going on the IL allows him to heal and the team to add another player to the roster — in this case, outfielder Abraham Almonte, who was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse.

“We’re hoping that he’s a player at the end of it,” Mets manager Buck Showalter said of Vientos. “But just to be on the safe side and get it completely cleared up. The thought was that playing that short for that long was going to be a challenge.”

Vientos is batting .195 (23-for-118) with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 37 games. He has played first base, third base and designated hitter, though more time at third since the ballclub sent down Brett Baty to the minor leagues on Aug. 7.

Vientos, 23, has two stints in New York this season, having been called up on May 17, sent down on June 18 and recalled on July 21.

Almonte, 34, has one hit and one walk in 12 plate appearances over four games this season for New York. He had been outrighted to Triple-A on Tuesday.

In another move, the Mets transferred left-hander Josh Walker from the 15-day to the 60-day IL because of a right oblique strain. The 28-year-old rookie effectively is done for the season with a 0-1 record and 8.10 ERA in 10 innings over 14 appearances.
