New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso left Wednesday’s 10-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first inning after he was hit on the right hand by left-hander James Paxton.
Initial examinations didn’t reveal a broken bone.
“With Pete, X-rays came back normal,” New York manager Carlos Mendoza said afterward. “Now we are waiting on the CT scan results and we won’t get that until tomorrow so we have to wait on that.”
Alonso checked his swing on the pitch and initially appeared to foul the ball off. But Alonso yelled in pain and fell to his knees before getting back up. He was visited by a trainer before exiting and being replaced by pinch runner Brett Baty. Mark Vientos replaced Alonso at first, with Baty taking third.
Alonso, 29, started each of the club’s 55 games this season and has played in all but 24 of New York’s 763 regular-season games since he reached the majors in 2019.
Alonso is batting .231 with 12 home runs and 26 RBIs this season. A three-time All-Star and the 2019 National League Rookie of the Year, he is a career .249 hitter with 204 homers and 524 RBIs.
