Matt Holliday resigned as the St. Louis Cardinals’ bench coach after just two months on the job.

In his place, the club hired Joe McEwing to fill the role Holliday was chosen for on manager Oliver Marmol’s staff.

USA Today reported that Holliday’s resignation was motivated by a desire to spend more time with his family.

Holliday, who turns 43 on Sunday, accepted the position on Nov. 6 after working as volunteer assistant coach at Oklahoma State.

The seven-time All-Star was inducted into the Cardinals Hall of Fame in August. He played eight of his 15 seasons with St. Louis (2009-16).

Holliday, an outfielder, retired after the 2018 season with a .299 batting average, .889 OPS, 316 homers, 1,220 RBIs and 2,096 hits in 1,903 games with the Colorado Rockies, Oakland A’s, Cardinals and New York Yankees.

Holliday’s son, Jackson, was the No. 1 overall pick by the Baltimore Orioles in 2022.

McEwing, 50, spent the past 15 years coaching in the Chicago White Sox organization, mostly recently as the third base coach from 2021-22. McEwing was drafted by the Cardinals and made his MLB debut in 1998. McEwing finished fifth in NL Rookie of the Year voting in 1999.
