MLB News: Marlins place RHP John McMillon (elbow) on 15-day IL

The Miami Marlins placed right-hander John McMillon on the 15-day injured list on Thursday because of right elbow tightness, one day after he got hurt on his second pitch of a relief outing.

In other moves, the Marlins activated right-hander Michael Petersen, selected the contract of righty Jeff Lindgren from Triple-A Jacksonville and designated lefty Jonathan Bermudez for assignment.

McMillon, 26, pitched briefly on Wednesday, yielding a single to Pittsburgh’s Nick Gonzales to lead off the third inning. McMillon exited without facing another batter in the Pirates’ 3-1 victory.

“Anytime you pull a guy off the mound and he doesn’t feel good with his forearm or elbow area, there’s always concern, especially this late in the season,” Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said on Thursday. “I don’t know how you can come back with only a couple of weeks left.

“He was really good for us when he was here, and he was making a name for himself in back-end, leverage type of spots that we’re using him in. So it definitely hurts our bullpen. But you know, we’re hoping for the best. MRI is later (Thursday), so we’ll, hopefully, have more news by tonight.”

McMillon is 2-1 this season, his first with Miami, with a 1.50 ERA, five walks and 13 strikeouts in 12 innings over 10 relief appearances. He made his major league debut with the Kansas City Royals in 2023, posting a 2.25 ERA in four innings.

The Marlins selected Petersen, 30, off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. The 6-foot-7 rookie was 3-0 with a 6.43 ERA, eight walks and 11 strikeouts in 14 innings over 11 relief appearances for the Dodgers.

“Michael Petersen’s a humongous man, which is intimidating when you see him on the mound, but a really nice kid,” Schumaker said. “He’s always had a big-time fastball, 97-99 miles an hour. So you’ll see that more often than not, he’s on the attack. He’s not scared by whoever’s in the batter’s box. So, hopefully, you’ll see him just fill up the strike zone and trust his stuff and see how it plays.”

Bermudez, 28, took his first defeat while starting the Wednesday loss to the Pirates. The rookie is 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA, two walks and four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings over three games (one start).

Lindgren, who will turn 28 on Tuesday, appeared in three games for the Marlins in the 2023 season, posting a 5.14 ERA with four walks and one strikeout in seven innings. He was 2-5 with a 6.19 ERA, 43 walks and 70 strikeouts in 75 2/3 innings over 24 games (11 starts) this season for Miami’s Double-A and Triple-A affiliates.
