MLB News: Marlins beat up on host Giants for series sweep

Agustin Ramirez came within a triple of a cycle, Kyle Stowers clubbed a three-run home run five pitches after his manager was ejected in the first inning, and the Miami Marlins ran up a season-high run total in a 12-5 romp over the San Francisco Giants to complete a three-game road sweep on Thursday afternoon.

Jesus Sanchez singled, walked twice and scored three runs, while Xavier Edwards and Eric Wagaman added two-RBI hits for the Marlins. They won their sixth in a row on the road, having swept the Washington Nationals to end their previous trip earlier this month.

Rafael Devers had a two-run homer for the Giants, who were swept in a three-game home series for the first time this season.

Following a testy 10-inning affair in which three San Francisco batters were hit by pitches, Giants starter Hayden Birdsong (3-2) retired the first two guys he faced in the rematch before nailing Otto Lopez in the hip with his next pitch.

The umpires immediately cautioned both benches, which didn’t go over well with Marlins skipper Clayton McCullough, who disputed the decision and was ejected.

Ramirez then hit Birdsong’s next delivery for a double, and Stowers followed four pitches later with his 12th home run of the season.

Ramirez’s homer, also his 12th, made it 5-0 in the third, before the Giants scored the game’s next five runs to draw even. Devers delivered the first two with his 17th homer of the season, his second as a Giant, and Brett Wiseley capped a three-run fourth with a two-run double against Marlins starter Janson Junk.

The Marlins dominated from there, however, scoring three times in the fifth and then four more in the eighth. Wagaman’s two-run double in the fifth gave Miami the lead for good, before Edwards’ two-run double ignited the game-breaking eighth.

Ramirez finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs for the Marlins, whose 12 runs were one more than their previous season-high. They totaled 11 hits, five for extra bases.

The Giants out-hit the visitors 12-11, with Devers and Willy Adames collecting three apiece, while Wisely and Christian Koss had two each.

Josh Simpson (1-0), who struck out Heliot Ramos with two aboard to preserve the 5-5 tie in the fourth, was credited with his first major league win after making his debut on Saturday. Junk allowed five runs and eight hits in his 3 2/3 innings. He struck out one and did not walk a batter.

Birdsong gave up seven runs in his four-plus innings, allowing four hits and four walks. He also struck out one.
