The New York Yankees hosted their first Old-Timers’ Day game since 2019 on Saturday. But the day’s 25th anniversary celebration of the franchise’s 2000 World Series triumph was marred by an injury as Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera tore his Achilles during the game.

Major League Baseball’s all-time saves leader, who was playing center field, was seen falling to the ground after taking a step during a Willie Randolph at-bat.

Rivera, who had a single during the 77th Old-Timers’ Day game that continued the tradition of honoring retired franchise legends, was examined by Yankees trainers before he left the stadium. Former New York hurler Roger Clemens told WFAN that he believed Rivera was in the hospital getting checked out.

“We all thought it was a hamstring,” Clemens said, “but I think it’s a little worse than that.”

Indeed it was, as Rivera’s agent confirmed to The Athletic that the Yankee great will undergo surgery to repair the torn Achillies.

A 13-time All-Star, Rivera spent his entire 19-year career with the Yankees. He recorded 652 saves while pitching in a franchise-record 1,115 games. His 2.21 ERA ranks second in team history. Rivera was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2019 as the only player to be voted in unanimously.
