Scott Littlefield, who worked with the Texas Rangers baseball operations department for the past 16 years, passed away Friday. He was 59.

Per the Rangers, Littlefield was in Houston on assignment in his role as a special assistant, player personnel. No cause of death was released by the club.

Littlefield had a 34-year career in MLB scouting with the Atlanta Braves (1991-97), Pittsburgh Pirates (1997-2004) and Rangers, who hired Littlefield in November 2009.

“The Texas Rangers are devastated by the passing of Scott Littlefield,” said Chris Young, Rangers president of baseball operations. “Scott was one of the most respected scouts in Major League Baseball who had an incredible impact on this organization. His voice was influential in all aspects of our baseball operation from professional, amateur, and international scouting to Major League player evaluation. He was an invaluable resource and advisor.”

Littlefield also was heavily involved in the Rangers’ amateur and international scouting operations and received Texas’ Red Jacket Scout of the Year honors in 2019.

The Rangers advanced to the playoffs six times during Littlefield’s tenure, including a World Series win in 2023.

Young shared condolences with Littlefield’s family, including his wife, Heather, and children Tyler, who is a scout for the San Diego Padres, and Erika, who is an amateur scouting assistant for the Baltimore Orioles.

“He was one of the most genuine and caring individuals in the game,” Young said. “The Littlefields are a baseball family with his two children and two brothers all working for MLB teams. Several of us were just with Scott in Houston this week, and his passion for our team never waned.”

The Maine native had two brothers who also worked in the league. Dave is a former general manager with the Pirates and Mark is the medical coordinator for the New York Yankees.
