MLB News: Kodai Senga, Mets too strong for Marlins

Kodai Senga recorded a second straight solid start Saturday afternoon for the host New York Mets, who continued their early season mastery of the Miami Marlins with a 5-2 victory.

Pete Alonso and Eduardo Escobar each hit two-run homers for the Mets, who have won five of six games against the Marlins this season.

Jeff McNeil, who turned 31 Saturday, worked a bases-loaded walk in the first inning to give New York a lead it would never relinquish.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. belted a solo homer while Luis Arraez had an RBI single for the Marlins, who have been outscored 31-13 by the Mets.

Senga (2-0) was starting against the Marlins and left-hander Trevor Rogers just as he did in his major league debut last Sunday. Senga allowed one run on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts over six innings on Saturday.

The 30-year-old, who won 87 games in his native Japan from 2012 through 2022, gave up back-to-back one-out singles to Garrett Cooper and Arraez in the first before setting down 14 of the next 15 batters. Chisholm ended that run by going deep to lead off the sixth.

Senga walked Arraez with one out and walked Jean Segura with two outs before retiring Avisail Garcia on a grounder to third.

Senga has a 1.59 ERA and 14 strikeouts in his first 11 1/3 innings.

The Mets extended their lead to 3-0 on Alonso’s two-run homer in the fifth inning and went ahead 5-1 on Escobar’s two-run shot in the sixth.

They withstood the Marlins’ final threat in the seventh. Miami loaded the bases against Drew Smith and Brooks Raley before Arraez laced a two-out RBI single.

John Curtiss entered and retired Jorge Soler on a pop out to second and then threw a perfect eighth inning. That set up David Robertson, who threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his second save.

Mark Canha had two hits for the Mets.

Arraez’s two-hit game was his fourth multi-hit game in nine appearances this season.

Rogers (0-2) allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five over 4 2/3 innings.
