Jake Burger homered and doubled Friday night, knocking in two runs as the Miami Marlins built a 4-0 lead and then held off the visiting New York Mets 6-4.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. also had two hits and stole his 19th base for Miami, which took a 4-3 lead in the season series. Anthony Bender (4-2) pitched two-thirds of an inning to pick up the win, and closer Tanner Scott got the final four outs for his 15th save.

Sean Manaea (6-4) absorbed the loss after permitting five runs on eight hits and a walk over five innings, fanning one. Marlins starter Edward Cabrera was removed one out shy of qualifying for a win, giving up five hits and two runs, one earned, in 4 2/3 innings. He walked five and struck out one.

New York wasted a two-homer game from Jeff McNeil. The Mets stranded nine runners, going 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

The Marlins initiated scoring in the second when Xavier Edwards grounded an RBI single to right that scored Otto Lopez, followed by a sacrifice fly from Emmanuel Rivera that plated Jesus Sanchez.

Miami made it 4-0 in the third when Burger laced an RBI double into the left field corner and then scored via Josh Bell’s single to center.

McNeil got the Mets on the board in the fifth with a leadoff homer to center that barely cleared the glove of Chisholm. After Cabrera issued a pair of walks and then made a throwing error on a pickoff attempt that moved the runners up, J.D. Martinez scored Francisco Lindor with a sacrifice fly.

Burger led off the fifth with his 11th homer of the year to up the margin to 5-2, but McNeil rifled a two-run homer in the sixth, his seventh of the season. New York put the potential go-ahead runs aboard in the eighth, but Scott came in and retired Lindor on a pop-up.

Nick Fortes added insurance for the Marlins in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out RBI single.
