David Fry drove in two runs and scored the other as the Cleveland Guardians beat the visiting New York Mets 3-1 for their fourth straight victory on Monday night.

Fry delivered a two-run single in the first inning and came home on rookie Kyle Manzardo’s fourth-inning double for the American League Central-leading Guardians, who have won seven of eight overall and are amid a 14-3 home stretch.

Guardians starter Ben Lively (3-2) allowed one run and struck out seven through 5 2/3 innings. He yielded a third-inning home run to Tomas Nido and five other hits but didn’t walk a batter.

Tylor Megill (0-2) returned from a shoulder issue suffered in his season debut March 31 to give New York five decent innings. Megill allowed three runs (two earned) to go with four hits and two walks while striking out seven.

The Mets held Cleveland to only four hits but still suffered their 18th loss in 27 games.

Megill retired the first two batters he faced, then allowed a single to Jose Ramirez. Josh Naylor followed with a hit to left field that New York’s Brandon Nimmo misplayed, resulting in runners on second and third. Fry then lined a ball to right that scored both.

The Mets got a run back in the third after Lively set down the first two batters of the inning. He then hung a breaking pitch that ninth-place hitter Nido cleared over the 19-foot-high left field wall for just his second home run of the season.

Fry got things going in the fourth when he drew a walk, stole second and came home via Manzardo’s hit to straight-away center field.

New York loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth. Nick Sandlin entered the game with two on and walked Tyrone Taylor on four pitches, but he then fanned Brett Baty to keep it a 3-1 contest.

Cleveland’s Emmanuel Clase (14 saves) and three other relievers before him didn’t allow a hit and retired the final 10 New York batters.

Former Guardians favorite Francisco Lindor went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in his first appearance at Cleveland since being traded to the Mets in January 2021.
