Matt Chapman had three hits and scored twice and the San Francisco Giants, scoring all their runs on infield outs, won a pitchers’ duel over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies, 3-1 in the opener of a three-game series Monday night.

After Landen Roupp and Cristopher Sanchez had done most of the heavy lifting in a 1-1 game, the Giants got a break when Phillies reliever Orion Kerkering (5-4) sandwiched Chapman’s single with no outs in the eighth with hit batsmen, nailing Willy Adames to lead off the inning and Wilmer Flores to load the bases.

The Giants then went on to score twice without another hit, with perfectly placed out-producing ground balls by Casey Schmitt and Jung Hoo Lee plating the difference-making runs.

Tyler Rogers (4-2), who pitched around a leadoff single by Kyle Schwarber in the top of the eighth, was credited with the win. Camilo Doval, who survived a 13-pitch battle with J.T. Realmuto, worked a scoreless ninth for his 14th save.

Roupp left a 1-1 game after five innings, having limited the Phillies to four hits and two walks. He struck out three.

Philadelphia’s only run against him came in the fifth after Bryson Stott’s grounder right at first baseman Flores took a crazy hop and went down the right-field line for a double. An infield out and wild pitch brought Stott around with the game-tying run.

Attempting to earn points toward a replacement bid to next week’s All-Star Game, Sanchez stuck around for seven innings, during which he allowed one run and seven hits. He walked one and struck out eight.

The seven-game winner lowered his season ERA to 2.59 with a fourth consecutive game allowing one run.

Seeking a third straight win, the Giants got to him for a second-inning tally on consecutive singles by Chapman and Flores, a Schmitt walk and a Luis Matos grounder to second.

Chapman was the only player in the game with multiple hits with his double and two singles. The three-hit game was his third of the season.

Stott’s bad-hop double was the only extra-base hit of the night for the Phillies, who were opening a six-game California swing.
