MLB News: Edgar Quero providing offense as White Sox take on A’s

Edgar Quero continues to be impressive in his limited time in the major leagues with the Chicago White Sox.

The rookie catcher was 2-for-3 with an RBI, two runs and two walks in the White Sox’s 10-3 win over the Oakland Athletics in West Sacramento, Calif., on Saturday.

The victory gave Chicago two wins in its past three games and evened the three-game series with the A’s at one game each going into the series finale Sunday afternoon.

The White Sox are looking for their second series win of 2025.

Quero, a 22-year-old switch hitter, is hitting .357 in 10 games since being brought up from Triple-A Charlotte.

“What stands out with Q is his ability to believe in himself. He goes up there and he knows he’s going to give the team a quality at-bat,” said Ryan Fuller, Chicago’s director of hitting. “You see with a lot of young guys coming up here. You’re on TV every night; there’s a lot more people in the stands. It can speed up. He slows the game down so well and especially, it’s not just early in the count, but when there’s two strikes.

“He moves his point of contact a little bit deeper; he knows he could go through that six-hole when he’s hitting lefty. Knock through that six-hole that they’re leaving open. So he has the ability to slow the game down, and let it come to him.”

Right-hander Davis Martin (1-3, 3.95 ERA) is scheduled to start on Sunday for the White Sox. He is 0-1 with an ERA of 3.68 against the Athletics in three career appearances (two starts). He took the loss April 17 when he gave up four runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings as the A’s shut out the White Sox 8-0 in Chicago.

Tyler Gilbert pitched the first inning as the opener on Saturday for the second consecutive game. He is the first White Sox pitcher to start two consecutive games since Claude Osteen on July 20-21, 1975.

After Gilbert’s scoreless first, Jonathan Cannon (1-3) pitched 7 2/3 innings and got the win.

The White Sox also acquired infielder Gabe Workman from the Chicago Cubs for cash considerations and designated infielder Nick Maton for assignment on Saturday.

The Athletics not only were beaten decisively on the field Saturday, but they lost a starting pitcher.

They placed right-hander JT Ginn on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation and recalled left-handed pitcher Jacob Lopez from Triple-A Las Vegas.

There had been no indication that Ginn was not fully healthy. The rookie has made three starts with a 4.61 ERA in 13 2/3 innings. The 25-year-old had Tommy John surgery in 2020.
As far as Saturday’s game was concerned, there really was not much for Athletics manager Mark Kotsay to say.

“Overall, offensively, we didn’t do much,” he said. “Sometimes you give a pitcher credit, and I thought the job their starter did was pretty good.”

Luis Urias homered, Miguel Andujar drove home a run with a groundout, and Nick Kurtz singled in a run for the A’s.

Right-hander Osvaldo Bido (2-2, 4.85 ERA) is scheduled to start against Chicago on Sunday. He got the win against the White Sox on April 16, allowing a run on five hits with one walk and no strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings as the Athletics won 3-1 in Chicago.
