MLB News: Dodgers’ roster hopeful Miguel Vargas fractures finger

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder/first baseman Miguel Vargas, who is expected to make his first Opening Day roster, has been sidelined with a fractured pinkie finger on his right hand.

There is no timetable for a return, but the injury is not believed to be serious. The injury occurred while doing defensive work at the team’s spring training complex at Glendale, Ariz.

Vargas has played in just 18 major league games but is expected to get significant use this season, with a roster spot available following the departure of former National League MVP Cody Bellinger.

While left field and first base are Vargas’ primary positions, the club is hoping he can progress enough as a second baseman this spring to fill the Dodgers’ void there once the regular season begins.

Vargas, 23, batted .170 with one home run and eight RBIs in limited use in the major leagues last season. In 113 games at Triple-A Oklahoma City last season, Vargas batted .304 with a .915 OPS and had 17 home runs with 82 RBIs.
