The Los Angeles Dodgers released longtime contributor Chris Taylor on Sunday and activated infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman from the 10-day injured list.
The Dodgers also placed right-handed reliever Kirby Yates (right hamstring strain) on the 15-day injured list and promoted righty Lou Trivino from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Taylor, 34, was in his 10th season with the Dodgers. He has batting just .200 with two RBI in 28 games this season. He was in the final season of a four-year, $60 million contract.
Taylor was acquired from the Seattle Mariners during the 2016 season and hit a career-best 21 homers the following year. His versatility allowed him to accumulate plenty of playing time in the outfield and at shortstop, second base and third base.
Taylor was an All-Star in 2021 when he hit 20 homers and drove in a career-high 73 runs. He also had four homers and 12 RBIs in 11 playoff games that season. He was part of World Series title teams in 2020 and 2024.
In 1,093 regular-season games, Taylor has a .250 career average with 108 homers and 433 RBIs.
The release of Taylor comes four days after the Dodgers designated longtime backup catcher Austin Barnes for assignment. Barnes, 35, was in his 11th season with the Dodgers.
“This has been an emotional week for all of us,” Los Angeles general manager Andrew Friedman told reporters Sunday. “Barnsey and CT have been in the middle of some huge moments for this organization. Both guys left an indelible mark on our culture and where we’re at this point. So the decisions were incredibly difficult. The conversations were tough, but with where we are, the division race, the composition of roster, everything.
“We felt that this was in the Dodgers’ best interest in terms of how to win as many games and put us in a position to best win the World Series this year. Doesn’t mean it was easy, but ultimately felt like it was the right thing to do.”
Edman, 29, is back from an ankle injury that caused him to miss 16 games. He batted sixth and played center field on Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels.
Edman entered Sunday with a .252 average and eight homers and 24 RBIs. He is in his second season with the Dodgers and was National League Championship Series MVP last season.
Edman was a .263 hitter entering Sunday through seven seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals (2019-23) and Dodgers. He has 67 homers and 266 RBIs.
Yates, 38, is 3-2 with a 4.34 ETA in 22 appearances for the Dodgers this season. The two-time All-Star is 29-23 with 96 saves in 444 career outings with the Tampa Bay Rays (2014-15), New York Yankees (2016), Los Angeles Angels (2017), San Diego Padres (2017-20), Atlanta Braves (2022-23), Texas Rangers (2024) and Dodgers.
Trivino signed with the Dodgers as a minor league free agent on May 11 and pitched one scoreless inning at Oklahoma City. The 33-year-old went 1-0 with a 5.84 ERA for the San Francisco Giants this season before being designated for assignment. Overall, he is 22-25 with a 3.94 ERA in 296 appearances (one start) with the then-Oakland Athletics (2018-22), Yankees (2022) and Giants (2025).
