Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Kevin Ginkel escaped a serious knee injury Saturday after being drilled by a comebacker during the sixth inning of a 10-5 victory over the host New York Mets.

The right-handed Ginkel was hit on his left knee by Brandon Nimmo’s hard-hit comebacker and was down on the ground for approximately two minutes while being attended to by trainers. He was able to walk off the field but departed the game.

Ginkel underwent X-rays and was diagnosed with a contusion, according to manager Torey Lovullo, who also said Ginkel is day-to-day.

“Hopefully, he’ll be available tomorrow,” Lovullo said.

Nimmo was retired on the play as the ball caromed toward catcher Gabriel Moreno, who threw to first to retire Nimmo.

Ginkel, 30, retired all three batters he faced and was credited with the victory. He is 3-1 with a 4.09 ERA and five saves in 23 appearances this season.

Ginkel had a stellar postseason last year when the Diamondbacks reached the World Series before falling to the Texas Rangers. He made 10 scoreless appearances and struck out 15 while allowing eight hits and five walks in 11 2/3 innings.

Overall, Ginkel is 16-6 with a 3.64 ERA in 189 career regular-season appearances, all in relief since reaching the majors with Arizona in 2019.
