Ketel Marte had four hits, Blaze Alexander belted his first grand slam and Jordan Montgomery won his Arizona Diamondbacks debut in a 17-1 victory over the host San Francisco Giants on Friday night.
The Diamondbacks’ 22 hits tied a franchise record set in 2013, when they beat the Philadelphia Phillies 12-7 in an 18-inning game.
Marte went 4-for-6 with an RBI and a run in the leadoff spot and Alexander finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs and scored twice. Christian Walker went 3-for-6 with three runs, a double and RBI.
Montgomery and his counterpart on Friday, San Francisco left-hander Blake Snell, were two coveted free agents who signed late this spring.
Montgomery, who came over from the Texas Rangers, did not participate in spring training with Arizona.
After two starts with Triple-A Reno, Montgomery (1-0) took the mound and allowed one run on four hits in six innings. He struck out three without a walk.
Snell, who left the San Diego Padres to sign with the rival Giants, gave up nine hits and five runs in 4 2/3 innings to drop to 0-3. His ERA is 11.57.
An RBI single by Marte in the third and an RBI double by Alexander in the fourth gave Arizona a 2-0 lead.
Jorge Soler belted a home run to lead off the fourth for San Francisco, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The Diamondbacks then chased Snell in the fifth, when they took a 5-1 lead with two outs.
In that inning, Marte led off with a double and scored on Walker’s single, and Randal Grichuk later hit a two-run double.
Gabriel Moreno, who went 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs, hit a two-run double with one out in the seventh to extend the lead to 7-1.
The Diamondbacks tacked on two more runs in the inning when Kevin Newman’s single up the middle forced in Grichuk. On the play, Moreno scored on a throwing error by center fielder Tyler Fitzgerald.
Arizona plated six runs in the eighth, highlighted by Alexander’s grand slam off Nick Avila.
