MLB News: Buster Posey joins Giants’ ownership group

Seven-time All-Star Buster Posey is joining the ownership group of the San Francisco Giants, less than a year after playing his final game with the franchise.

A 12-year member of the Giants, he won three World Series in San Francisco. He is the first former Giants player to join the organization as a principal partner and member of its board of directors.

The team did not disclose his ownership stake or amount of financial investment.

“I feel deeply connected to the Giants and the San Francisco Bay Area and hope that my perspective as a former player will be beneficial in growing the game and assisting the organization to build the next championship team both on and off the field,” Posey, 35, said in a news release. “I have always had such great respect for the ownership group, many of whom I’ve gotten to know through the years, who provided the support for me and my teammates to achieve the successes we did. I also believe that I can learn so much by surrounding myself with business leaders who have been at the top of their respective industries.”

Posey, who retired at the end of the 2021 season, becomes the 31st — and youngest — principal partner of the organization. Giants chairman Greg Johnson said the franchise is happy to have him.

“Upon his retirement last year, Buster said that he would always stay involved with the organization and when he approached us to express his interest in joining the ownership group, we were thrilled that he wanted to make this type of commitment,” Johnson said.

The Giants selected Posey, a catcher, with the No. 5 overall pick of the 2008 MLB Draft. He made his major league in a September 2009 call up, then won National League Rookie of the Year the following season. He won the league batting title in 2012, hitting .336, and was voted NL Most Valuable Player.

Posey played 1,371 games with the Giants, amassing 1,500 hits, 158 home runs, 729 RBIs and a career average of .302.
