The Atlanta Braves optioned right-handed pitcher Mike Soroka to Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday, one week after his long-anticipated comeback from injury.

Soroka, 25, missed more than two full seasons after twice tearing his right Achilles tendon. On May 29 he started for the Braves in his first major league appearance since Aug. 3, 2020.

Soroka took the loss in that game before lasting just 3 2/3 innings in his second start of the season Sunday against the host Arizona Diamondbacks. Over his first two starts back, the 2019 All-Star has pitched to an 8.38 ERA (nine earned runs in 9 2/3 innings). He’s struck out five batters and walked six.

The 2019 campaign was Soroka’s lone full season in the major leagues. Across parts of four seasons with Atlanta, he is 15-7 with a 3.10 career ERA in 39 starts.

The Braves also transferred left-hander Max Fried to the 60-day IL on Monday while claiming infielder Luke Williams off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Fried, 29, has been on the injured list since early May with a left forearm strain. The National League Cy Young Award runner-up last season is coming off his first career All-Star selection with a 14-7 record and a 2.48 ERA in 2022. He was 2-1 with a 2.08 ERA in five starts this season before his injury.

In seven seasons with the Braves, Fried is 56-26 with a 3.05 ERA in 130 appearances (113 starts).

Williams, 26, had been placed on waivers by the Dodgers, who are in need of spots on the 40-man roster as multiple players near a return from the IL. The Braves optioned Williams to Gwinnett.

Williams went 1-for-10 in 10 games for the Dodgers this season. In 141 major league games over the past three seasons with four different clubs, Williams is a .234 hitter with two home runs and 12 RBIs.
