Jose Altuve started 154 games for the Houston Astros last season, but he ended the season fighting foot pain that required a surgical procedure on Monday.

The Astros used Altuve at second base and left field in 2025 and he played 155 total games, more than any of the past nine seasons.

Altuve, who also made 49 starts as Houston’s designated hitter, hit .265 with 26 home runs, 77 RBIs and 80 runs.

MLB.com reported the procedure was a skin aspiration and was required to drain fluid from a wound between his fourth and fifth toes on his right foot.

The initial sign of injury came on Sept. 13 when Altuve exited the Astros’ 6-2 win over the Braves in Atlanta. After a single, Altuve slid into second base on a fielder’s choice and didn’t take the field in the bottom of the inning.

Manager Joe Espada said Altuve told him “my foot is bothering me” after running the bases.

He led Houston in games played, at-bats (588), hits (156), walks (55) and runs and was one behind team leader Christian Walker in home runs (26).

Altuve, 35, has played in 2,081 career games (including 105 postseason games) and has 2,576 hits.
