Shea Langeliers raced home from second base on DJ LeMahieu’s throwing error with two outs in the 11th inning Saturday night, allowing the host Oakland Athletics to record a 3-2 walk-off win over the New York Yankees.
The Yankees finished with just one hit. Their winning streak ended at five.
Each team scored twice in the 10th and Joel Payamps (3-3) held the Yankees scoreless in the top of the 11th. The A’s had two on with one out in the bottom of the inning when Lou Trivino (2-8) got Chad Pinder to hit a potential double-play grounder to Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
The Yankees shortstop flipped to LeMahieu covering second for the second out of the inning. But with Sean Murphy sliding into his leg, LeMahieu threw wildly to first, allowing Langeliers to score the winning run. The Yankees challenged Murphy’s slide, but the call stood.
It was Oakland’s third walk-off win in the last eight days.
The Yankees scored the first two runs of the game with two outs in the 10th on an A.J. Puk wild pitch and subsequent throwing error by catcher Murphy. But Oakland pinch-hitter Stephen Vogt tied it with a two-run homer off Ron Marinaccio in the bottom of the inning.
The clubs combined for a total of seven hits, just four of which came during a tremendous pitchers’ duel between New York’s Domingo German, who worked 7 2/3 innings, and Oakland’s Adam Oller, who went a full eight.
Both starters took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before the Yankees’ Oswaldo Cabrera ended Oller’s bid with a leadoff double in the top of the inning.
The A’s’ Nick Allen then was credited with a single on a chopper that German threw away at first base with one out in the bottom of the sixth.
Pinder gave the A’s a second hit with a two-out single in the seventh, and Oakland nearly scored in the eighth after Cal Stevenson lashed a one-out double. Jonathan Loaisiga replaced German with two out and stranded Stevenson at third by getting Tony Kemp to ground out.
German struck out five and didn’t walk anyone in his 7 2/3 innings.
Oller didn’t allow another hit after Cabrera’s double as he finished a season-high eight innings. He walked one and struck out three.
