The Los Angeles Angels reinstated infielder Luis Rengifo from the 10-day injured list on Thursday and acquired right-hander Roansy Contreras in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, multiple outlets reported.
Rengifo, 27, had been sidelined with a viral illness that resulted in painful blisters on his feet.
He is batting .330 with two homers, 11 RBIs and nine steals in 28 games this season, his sixth with the Angels.
Rengifo is a career .249 hitter with 49 homers, 168 RBIs and 27 stolen bases in 476 games since his 2019 debut.
Contreras, 24, was designated for assignment Saturday when Pittsburgh’s top pitching prospect, Paul Skenes, was brought up to the major leagues. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates received cash in return to complete the deal.
Contreras made 12 relief appearances for the Pirates this season and went 1-0 with a 4.41 ERA. In parts of four seasons, all with the Pirates, Contreras is 9-12 with a 4.83 ERA over 53 outings (30 starts).
The Angels optioned infielder Niko Goodrum and right-hander Davis Daniel to Triple-A Salt Lake after Wednesday’s 7-2 win against the St. Louis Cardinals.
