Shohei Ohtani threw eight scoreless innings, allowed just two hits and struck out a career-high 13 to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a 5-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night in Anaheim, Calif.

The performance came one night after Ohtani homered twice and drove in eight runs.

Ohtani (6-4) gave up back-to-back singles to Whit Merrifield and Andrew Benintendi to begin the game but did not allow another hit the rest of the way, retiring the next 16 batters in a row. The only Royals batter to reach base after the first inning was Merrifield, who walked in the sixth but was erased on a double-play grounder. In all, Ohtani made a season-high 108 pitches.

At the plate, Ohtani went 1-for-3 with two walks.

Royals starter Daniel Lynch (3-7) matched Ohtani zero for zero through four innings. But in the fifth, the Angels pushed across a run.

Astros 5, Mets 3

Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez hit back-to-back homers to cap a four-run first inning and vault host Houston past New York, and a sweep of the two-game interleague series.

Alvarez finished with two homers for the Astros, who have won three straight and seven of nine. It was the fourth two-homer game of the season for Alvarez. The Astros scored all of their first-inning runs before Carlos Carrasco (8-3) recorded an out.

The Mets were swept in a series for the first time this season. Carrasco allowed the five runs on four hits and two walks, with two strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.

Yankees 5, Rays 4

Jose Trevino smashed an eighth-inning, two-run homer as New York rallied past Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Aaron Judge went deep twice for the Yankees. Clarke Schmidt (4-2) tossed a scoreless seventh, and Clay Holmes was perfect in the ninth for his 12th save.

Tampa Bay’s Isaac Paredes notched his fourth homer in two games, and Vidal Brujan homered and drove in three runs. Reliever Ralph Garza Jr. (0-2) served up Trevino’s winning homer.

Marlins 7, Rockies 4

Pablo Lopez won his first game this month, allowing no earned runs in seven innings while leading host Miami to a victory over Colorado.

Miami also got two-run homers from Garrett Cooper and Jazz Chisholm Jr. Jorge Soler added a solo blast. Cooper is hitting .313 with five homers. Lopez (5-3) allowed four hits, three walks and one unearned run. He threw 107 pitches and retired six batters by strikeout.

Chad Kuhl (4-5) took the loss, allowing six hits, two walks and four runs in five innings. He is 0-5 in seven career games against Miami.

Rangers 4, Phillies 2

Kole Calhoun drove in two runs on two hits, and Jon Gray yielded two runs in 5 2/3 innings as Texas completed a two-game sweep of Philadelphia in Arlington, Texas.

The Rangers swept all four games against the Phillies this season. And Philadelphia has dropped three straight for the first time since losing five in a row from May 27-31. The Phillies had won five straight series before losing both games at Texas.

Gray (3-3) surrendered a two-run homer to Kyle Schwarber in the third inning, but struck out five and scattered four hits. The Phillies received an uncharacteristically short start from right-hander Zack Wheeler (6-4), who was lifted after 4 1/3 innings.Wheeler had gone at least five innings in 10 straight starts.

Red Sox 6, Tigers 2

Jarren Duran, Rob Refsnyder and Alex Verdugo drove in two runs apiece and Michael Wacha pitched six strong innings as Boston swept a three-game series from visiting Detroit.

Refsnyder hit a two-run homer in the Red Sox’s four-run third inning, and he also doubled. Wacha (6-1) finished with seven strikeouts while allowing two runs on five hits and two walks.

Javier Baez went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer for the Tigers, who have lost nine of their past 11 games.

Padres 10, Diamondbacks 4

Jurickson Profar had four hits and drove in two runs as San Diego scored six runs in the first two innings against Madison Bumgarner to defeat visiting Arizona and complete a three-game series sweep.

The Padres, who have won six of seven games this season against the Diamondbacks, scored four in the first and two in the second — although Bumgarner (3-7) could have escaped trouble in both innings with better defense.

Christian Walker hit his 19th homer of the season and rookie Alek Thomas hit his sixth for Arizona.

Cardinals 5, Brewers 4

Paul Goldschmidt and Nolen Arenado each hit a two-run homer to pace visiting St. Louis to a victory over Milwaukee, moving the Cardinals a game ahead of the Brewers in the NL Central.

Johan Oviedo (1-1) picked up the victory with 2 1/3 perfect innings in relief of starter Adam Wainwright, who allowed four runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. Genesis Cabrera finished with two scoreless innings for his first save.

The Brewers put two aboard in the ninth when pinch-hitter Victor Caratini walked with two outs and Tyrone Taylor was hit by a pitch, but Christian Yelich grounded to second.

Braves 4, Giants 3

Adam Duvall’s two-out single scored William Contreras to complete a three-run, ninth-inning rally and give Atlanta a walk-off win over visiting San Francisco.

The Braves rallied to tie the game in the ninth inning against reliever Jake McGee (1-2). Dansby Swanson led off with a home run, his 10th. Marcell Ozuna singled, aggressively went to second on Matt Olson’s long fly ball and scored the tying run on a single by Contreras.

Tyler Rogers entered and struck out Orlando Arcia, but Contreras stole second base and was able to slide home safely ahead of the throw from center fielder Austin Slater on Duvall’s hit. Atlanta also had a walk-off win on Monday and has won two of the first three games of the four-game series.

Blue Jays 9, White Sox 5

Bo Bichette hit his second career grand slam, right-hander Ross Stripling pitched six effective innings and visiting Toronto defeated Chicago.

Teoscar Hernandez hit a two-run homer and Alejandro Kirk added a solo shot for the Blue Jays, who salvaged the finale of the three-game series after dropping the first two. Stripling (4-2) allowed one run, five hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

Chicago right-hander Luis Giolito (4-4) allowed seven runs, 11 hits and one walk in five innings with three strikeouts.

Dodgers 8, Reds 4

The red-hot Freddie Freeman drove in the go-ahead run with a solo homer and added another RBI as visiting Los Angeles rallied from a three-run hole to beat Cincinnati. Freeman has seven RBIs in the first two games of the series for the Dodgers.

Alex Vesia (1-0) pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief of starter Tyler Anderson to notch his first win of the season.

Kyle Farmer had two doubles and three hits for the Reds, who dropped their sixth straight and fell to 0-5 on a homestand that concludes Thursday against the Dodgers.

Cubs 14, Pirates 5

Patrick Wisdom homered and drove in four runs and Alfonso Rivas hit a grand slam and knocked in five as visiting Chicago clobbered Pittsburgh to snap a three-game losing streak.

Ian Happ added a two-run homer and Rafael Ortega hit a two-run double among his three hits for the Cubs, who scored seven in the second inning. Chicago starter Keegan Thompson (7-2) gave up one run and four hits in six innings, with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Diego Castillo hit a solo homer — and, with the lopsided situation, pitched the ninth inning — and Bligh Madris hit a three-run double for the Pirates, who had won a season-high-tying three in a row.

Guardians 11, Twins 10

Owen Miller drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly during a four-run ninth and Oscar Gonzalez homered and drove in four runs as Cleveland rallied for a wild victory over Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Amed Rosario went 4-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs and two runs scored while Austin Hedges also homered for American League Central-leading Cleveland, which won its third straight game and improved to 15-4 in June.

Steven Kwan tripled and had two hits and Myles Straw also had two hits and scored two times for the Guardians.

Orioles 7, Nationals 0 (6 innings)

Austin Hays hit for the cycle and starting pitcher Tyler Wells threw five shutout innings as Baltimore defeated visiting Washington in a rain-shortened game.

Hays went 4-for-4, completing the cycle with a sixth-inning double with rain coming down. He became the franchise’s sixth player to hit for the cycle, though all the others achieved the feat in the seventh inning or later.

Wells (5-4) won his third consecutive start and his fourth straight decision. It was his 14th start of the season and just the third time he didn’t yield a run.

Mariners 9, Athletics 0

Rookie George Kirby combined with two relievers for his second shutout of the season and Jesse Winker drove in three runs with a single and a home run as Seattle made it two straight blowout wins over host Oakland.

Cal Raleigh also homered for the Mariners, who used four homers as the foundation for an 8-2 romp in the series opener Tuesday.

Supported by single runs in each of the first three innings before a five-run fifth, Kirby (2-2) coasted through a season-best-tying six innings. He limited the A’s to five singles and a walk, striking out six.
