Josh Naylor belted a two-run homer with two outs in the 10th inning, capping a four-run rally that powered the Cleveland Guardians to a stunning 7-6 victory over the visiting Minnesota Twins on Wednesday.
The Twins scored three in the top of the 10th, then got the first out in the bottom of the 10th with the automatic runner at second base. A walk to Steven Kwan (3-for-4) and a wild pitch put runners at the corners for Amed Rosario, who hit an RBI double to cap a 4-for-4 night.
Jharel Cotton (2-2) replaced Emilio Pagan on the mound, and he retired Jose Ramirez on a lineout. Kwan then scored on a passed ball to bring the Guardians within one run. Naylor then hit an opposite-field blast to the bleachers in left field for his ninth homer of the season.
Guardians reliever Eli Morgan (4-2) allowed three runs in the top of the 10th yet earned the win. Cleveland starter Cal Quantrill pitched a career-high eight innings but left with a no-decision. The right-hander surrendered eight hits, three runs and no walks. He struck out three batters.
Astros 2, Mets 0
Jason Castro hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning as Houston completed a two-game sweep of an interleague set against host New York.
Castro, who entered the game hitting .095 with one RBI, belted his first home run of the season into the right-field bleachers against Drew Smith (1-2). New York had just one baserunner after the first inning and has lost three straight for the first time this season.
The game featured a dynamic pitchers’ duel between Houston’s Justin Verlander (10-3) and New York’s Taijuan Walker. Verlander allowed two hits over eight shutout innings in his first start at Citi Field since 2010. Houston won four straight against the Mets over the past eight days by a combined score of 24-6.
Marlins 4, Cardinals 3
Avisail Garcia hit a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning to rally visiting Miami past St. Louis to avoid a three-game sweep.
Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara (8-3) threw a complete game while allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits. He struck out three while walking two, throwing a season-high 117 pitches in his fourth career complete game.
Cardinals starting pitcher Andre Pallante held the Marlins to two runs on five hits and a walk over seven innings, striking out two. Giovanny Gallegos retired Miami in order in the eighth inning, but Ryan Helsley (3-1) allowed Garcia’s blast in the ninth.
Dodgers 8, Rockies 4
Freddie Freeman, Will Smith and Cody Bellinger hit home runs as Los Angeles avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of Colorado in Denver.
The Dodgers received two of their three home runs from the top three spots in the order and got five hits from the bottom three spots. No. 8 hitter Gavin Lux had two hits, while No. 9 hitter Eddy Alvarez drove in two runs.
Brendan Rodgers had a home run among his three hits, and he drove in three runs for the Rockies, who saw their four-game home winning streak against the Dodgers come to an end. Colorado leads the season series 4-2 with its first visit to Los Angeles coming up next week.
Angels 4, White Sox 1
Shohei Ohtani threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out 11 to lead Los Angeles to a win over Chicago in Anaheim, Calif.
Ohtani went 0-for-3 with a walk at the plate, but got offensive support from Mike Trout (RBI double) and Luis Rengifo (two-run homer) as the Angels took two of three in the series. Ohtani, who has 24 strikeouts in his past two starts, has not allowed a run in his past three outings, extending his scoreless-innings streak to 21 2/3.
The White Sox finished with seven hits, four of them from Jose Abreu. Chicago’s only run of the game was unearned, as Luis Robert reached on an eighth-inning throwing error by shortstop Andrew Velazquez and later scored on a wild pitch by Ryan Tepera.
Brewers 5, Rays 3
Rowdy Tellez hit two home runs and Luis Urias and Jace Peterson also went deep as Milwaukee completed a two-game series sweep of Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla.
It was Tellez’s third multi-homer game of the season and second in the last three games. Brad Boxberger (2-1) picked up the win with one inning of scoreless relief. Josh Hader picked up his 24th save after overcoming one hit in a scoreless ninth inning.
Taylor Walls had two RBIs, Wander Franco had an RBI double and Harold Ramirez and Francisco Mejia each had two hits for Tampa Bay. Calvin Faucher (1-2) took the loss.
Yankees 5, Athletics 3
Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton homered in the same game for the ninth time this season and New York completed a sweep of visiting Oakland.
Judge hit his majors-best 29th homer two batters into the home half of the first when he lifted a full-count sinker to left field. After Judge’s 429-foot drive, Stanton hit his 19th homer with two outs in the third when he sent Irvin’s 2-2 changeup into the right-field seats. New York’s Jameson Taillon (9-1) survived a rocky start and allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings for his ninth straight win.
Oakland dropped to 5-20 this month and did all of its scoring in the opening inning as it was swept for the eighth time this year. Stephen Piscotty hit a two-run double and scored on a single by Elvis Andrus, who drove in five of Oakland’s nine runs in the series.
Pirates 8, Nationals 7
Bryan Reynolds hit three homers and drove in six runs, and Pittsburgh rallied past host Washington to snap a five-game losing streak.
Reynolds’ final homer was a three-run shot in the seventh inning to put Pittsburgh ahead to stay. Daniel Vogelbach also homered for the Pirates, who averted the three-game sweep. Chase De Jong (3-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the win. Yerry De Los Santos pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first major league save.
Yadiel Hernandez went deep for Washington and Josh Bell reached base five times with two doubles, a single and two walks for the Nationals, who had won three straight. The Nats out-hit Pittsburgh 16-9 but left 10 on base.
Padres 4, Diamondbacks 0
Mike Clevinger allowed one hit in six shutout innings and Jake Cronenworth snapped an 0-for-26 drought with three straight hits — driving in two runs and scoring a third — as visiting San Diego blanked Arizona to gain a split of the two-game series in Phoenix.
The only hit off Clevinger was a lead-off single by Geraldo Perdomo in the third. Clevinger (2-0) also issued a walk and struck out six in his longest outing of the season. It marked the first time since the end of the 2020 season that Clevinger worked at least six scoreless innings in a game.
Madison Bumgarner (3-8) gave up one run on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts in five innings for the Diamondbacks to take the loss. Bumgarner has yet to win a game against the Padres in his three seasons with the Diamondbacks, going 0-5 in eight starts.
Mariners 9, Orioles 3
Rookie Julio Rodriguez homered and drove in three runs as Seattle defeated visiting Baltimore, as the Mariners won for the seventh time in their past nine games.
Mariners right-hander Chris Flexen (4-8), who got some rare run support, allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings with two walks and three strikeouts. The Nos. 7-9 batters in Seattle’s lineup — Abraham Toro, Adam Frazier and Sam Haggerty — combined to go 6-for-11 and each scored twice.
Ryan Mountcastle hit a run-scoring double in the fourth for the Orioles, and Trey Mancini smacked a two-run double in the fifth.
Cubs 8, Reds 3
Willson Contreras and rookie Christopher Morel each clubbed two-run homers, and Nico Hoerner had a two-run double as Chicago beat visiting Cincinnati.
Contreras had three hits on the night and Justin Steele (3-5) allowed a run over five-plus innings for the Cubs, who evened this three-game set with their third win in five games.
Chicago also snapped a three-game skid to the Reds, who got two doubles with an RBI from Joey Votto and a late Brandon Drury homer.
Royals 2, Rangers 1
Zack Greinke pitched six solid innings for host Kansas City as it salvaged the final game of a three-game series with a victory over visiting Texas.
Greinke (2-4) made his 500th career start, the 48th pitcher in Major League Baseball history to reach that milestone. He is the only active pitcher to do so. He allowed one run on four hits while walking one and fanning three. The right-hander worked around plenty of traffic, as he only had two 1-2-3 innings.
The Royals got a run in the first on an RBI single by MJ Melendez before Leody Taveras tied things in the fifth with a solo home run. Kyle Isbel hit his second home run of the season — his second in as many games — to provide the winning run.
Tigers 3, Giants 2
Eric Haase belted a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning as visiting Detroit beat San Francisco to salvage a split of a two-game interleague series.
In wrapping up a 3-5 trip that began with three straight losses, the Tigers benefited from the 1,829th career RBI from Miguel Cabrera and five strong innings from starter Rony Garcia (3-2).
San Francisco’s only run against Garcia came on Evan Longoria’s eighth homer of the season in the first inning.
Braves 4, Phillies 1
Adam Duvall homered and drove in two runs to lift Atlanta past host Philadelphia.
Matt Olson added two doubles for the Braves, who have won the first two games of the three-game series. Atlanta’s William Contreras contributed two hits and an RBI. Braves starter Kyle Wright (9-4) threw seven strong innings, giving up three hits and one run.
Rhys Hoskins hit a solo home run and doubled for the Phillies, who managed only four hits total. Philadelphia starter Ranger Suarez (6-5) tossed 6 2/3 innings and allowed six hits and four runs to go along with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Red Sox 6, Blue Jays 5 (10 innings)
Alex Verdugo keyed a three-run 10th inning with a two-run double after earlier hitting a two-run homer as visiting Boston defeated Toronto.
Toronto’s David Phelps (0-2) walked Rob Refsnyder to open the 10th with Jackie Bradley Jr. as the automatic runner at second. Rafael Devers walked to load the bases. J.D. Martinez was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Tim Mayza replaced Phelps and induced a 3-2-3 double-play grounder from Xander Bogaerts. Verdugo followed with a two-run double.
Toronto scored twice in the bottom of the 10th, and George Springer hit a solo home run in the fifth for the Blue Jays. Starter Alek Manoah allowed three runs (two earned), six hits and one walk while striking out six in seven innings.
