MLB Marlins’ Daniel Castano exits after taking line drive to head

Miami Marlins left-hander Daniel Castano left Thursday’s 7-6 win over the host Cincinnati Reds after taking a 104-mph line drive to the head.

Per the Marlins, Castano has a mild concussion and a forehead contusion. A CT scan came back normal.

With one out in the bottom of the first inning, Reds third baseman Donovan Solano drilled a 1-1 pitch that ricocheted off the left side of Castano’s head and was caught for an out by Marlins third baseman Joey Wendle.

Castano dropped to his knees and remained down for a spell before walking off under his own power.

“It just kind of went black for a second to be honest with you,” Castano said while sporting a bandage on the left side of his forehead.

“… I think the first thing I asked was, ‘Did we get the out?’ Making sure everything was all right. I still wanted to compete and be in that game. But just not sure really what happened. I looked at my hand and there was a little blood, and I was like, ‘What happened?’ I’m a little out of it right now, but definitely better.”

Jeff Brigham came on to replace Castano, who allowed one run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning before exiting the contest.
