Seattle Mariners veteran right-hander Ken Giles was designated for assignment Friday after returning from the injured list.

Giles, 31, had been on the IL since July 9 with shoulder inflammation. After missing the 2021 season following Tommy John surgery, he started this season with a finger sprain sustained during spring training and had pitched in just five games this season.

He made 14 rehab appearances in the minor leagues this season around the two stints on the IL, compiling a 9.49 ERA with 10 walks and 15 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings.

Giles had 23 saves for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2019. In his eight-year major league career, he is 14-18 with a 2.71 ERA and 115 saves in 362 relief appearances with the Philadelphia Phillies, Houston Astros, Blue Jays, and Mariners.

Seattle’s 40-man major league roster currently sits at 38 players.
