Jordan Montgomery and three St. Louis Cardinals relievers combined to shut out the visiting New York Yankees 1-0 on two hits Saturday.

Montgomery (4-3), whom the Yankees dealt to the Cardinals for outfielder Harrison Bader just ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline, blanked his former teammates for five innings on two hits and one walk.

He exited the game for precautionary reasons after suffering leg cramps.

Relievers Jordan Hicks and Genesis Cabrera extended the shutout to the ninth inning and Giovanny Gallegos closed out the ninth for his 11th save.

Nolan Arenado drove in the only run for the Cardinals, who have won six straight games and eight of their last nine.

The Yankees have lost four consecutive games and five of their last six.

Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German (1-2) allowed one run on four hits in five innings. He struck out three batters and walked nobody.

Montgomery had to work out of trouble in his first inning for the Cardinals. After Aaron Judge hit a one-out single and Josh Donaldson walked, Montgomery got Gleyber Torres to hit into a double play.

The Cardinals took a 1-0 first-inning lead when Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-out double and Arenado followed with an RBI single.

They nearly struck again in the third inning. Nolan Gorman hit a two-out single and was thrown out trying to score on Goldschmidt’s double to the right-center field wall.

The Yankees threatened in the sixth inning. D.J. LeMahieu drew a one-out walk against Hicks and moved to second base on a wild pitch with two outs.

But Hicks left him there by striking out Donaldson.

The Cardinals stranded a runner in scoring position in the seventh inning. After Lars Nootbaar hit a one-out single and took second base on a groundout, Yadier Molina popped out to end the inning.
